I'm completely lost.....

I'm gonna be an upcoming senior in high school and I took the June 2009 ACT and got a 33 and a 10 out of 12 on my essay. This was my third time taking it (well second with writing). Well, I've always had my head set to University of Kentucky because its close to home and in my town, but after my ACT score I started to look into other schools. But most ivy leagues require you to take the SAT and I never looked into the SAT at all because I always thought I'd end up at UK and i feel like it's too late now!...so then I looked into places like vanderbilt or emory cause they require either the ACT or SAT. But the only way I'll be going to an out of state college is if I get a scholarship, a scholarship good enough to make vanderbilt/emory affordable. Can I get a scholarship with my score? I get A's and B's at school. I've only taken like 4 AP classes. My GPA is a 3.69 unweighted.

My older sister keeps telling me to only worry about getting a singletary scholarship at UK (basically pays for everything) because she doesn't think I can get a scholarship anywhere like Vanderbilt..or she thinks it'll be useless cause I'll have a fullride to UK. What should I do?

No, no Ivy League requires you to take the SAT. Most I know require you to take SAT Subject Tests though. However, some like Yale will accept only the ACT score. Remember that a lot of ivies/top schools also meet 100% of your need. So, you can get a full ride there through need based aid (based on need) or scholarships. Honestly, nobody can predict if you will get scholarships at schools like vandy or emory. You need to apply to find out. Maybe you should apply to both the US and UK and see where things fall.

Yeah, but my sister said I should focus on UK mostly cause she heard that they usually accept people with an act score of like 35 now… and I’m in the range, but I’m at the bottom of the range. Also, I havent prepared for the SAT subject tests or anything! i think i’ll apply to yale as well…do you think I can get in to yale with my standards?

Oh and my score was also the 99th percentile in the U.S…so i thought that would count for something…?

Yale is a reach for everyone. Yes, it counts. A person I know of got into Yale with that score. But for the top universities, GPA and test scores aren’t the be all end all as they are with some state universities. You also need strong extracurriculars, essays, recs, etc… Essentially, nobody can predict if you will or won’t get into the nation’s top univerisites like Yale, Emory, and Vandy. Here is a website to help you with your college search:

[Compass: Admissions Requirements](<a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations”>SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations)

Any college with a star next to the # of subject tests it requires will take only the ACT instead of the subject tests. For, example look at Yale. Also, some like Vandy and Emory just recommend you take subject tests. They don’t require you to. As long as you have a strong app, the missing subject tests shouldn’t hurt you too much. The Ivies that will take only the ACT are: Yale, University of Pennsylvania, and Brown. However, I might have missed one or two, just look at that chart. Other really good schools such as Duke, Vandy, and Emory will also just accept the ACT. Your ACT score definitely helps your application but it won’t get you in al by itself. You need high grades, good essays, recs, extracirriculars…

Right, that really helps, thank you! But see I’ve been told “yeah you’ll get in , you’ll get in” by plenty of people. There is, actually, a good chance I can get into Vandy and emory… but I can only go if I get a scholarship! I need to apply for scholarships, but do you think my score , without taking anything SAT related, is good enough for a scholarship? Do you have a website with scholarship information? Like a list of them or requirements?

You mean like this?:

[Merit Scholarship Programs](Scholarships | Vanderbilt University)
and
[Emory College | Current Students | Scholarships & Fellowships](<a href=“Error 404: Page Not Found”>Error 404: Page Not Found)

The Ivies don’t provide any merit-based scholarships. But they do offer A LOT of need-based scholarships. For example, if a family makes less than 60k and has like less than 70k or so of assets, the student essentially gets a full ride to Yale.

I’m not saying there isn’t a good chance you will get in. There is a good chance you will get into a top college in the US, but nobody can tell you for sure. These colleges are extremely picky. I would highly recommend you to apply. I don’t know if you will qualify for scholarships and I certainly don’t know which ones you would get. They are highly selective/open-ended and nobody can predict if you will get them. Its not like 36 ACT and you get a full ride to Vandy. They take into consideration things like extracirriculars, essays…

Go ahead and apply to U of K. Then look for other schools. Here is a link to many schools that offer merit aid of at least full tuition. (I hope my link works) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/211927-institutional-merit-based-scholarships-full-tuition.html</a>

Your 33 ACT makes you competitive. Go to their websites, and look around. Make a list of some that you think you might like. Research the scholarship requirements. Take all the colleges that you like that you have a shot at a scholarship and make a final list of 5 or 6 or more. Then apply. Make sure you beat the deadlines. Many scholarship deadlines are much earlier than application deadlines. Good luck.
