I'm confused about the whole resume thing...

In my school, our guidance counselors have us all write up resumes to send to colleges. So am I still supposed to fill out all of the info that's on my resume on the Common App?

You attach it as a document in the "Additional Information" session. Same at my school too. Good luck!

Thanks!

So just to clarify, does that mean that I do not fill out all the stuff on Common App that's on my resume? And what if my school mails it?

Bump.

A classmate of mine told me to put as much as possible on common app AND attach resume (in addition to my counselor mailing it). Then I talked to a GC (not my own) who told me that I didn't have to do anything on common app besides uploading it under addtl. info. But then she said I could put my senior activities on if I wanted to and just say "See attached resume for complete list" (but that just seems superfluous to me).

Gah, I'm so lost.

Might sound like a stupid question, but what is a resume for an application? I know what a resume is for jobs but is it the same thing?

The resume includes all my ECs, leadership positions, community service, and awards. Not a stupid question, as I had no clue what it was until my GC told me I needed one. But this is why I'm asking if I have to retype everything into the Common App.

Btw, I also have a section on my resume for "Creative Outlets" but all it says is that I took band (which although I was involved with it, I was not above-and-beyond involved). Should I include this?

Sweetnezz, you don't need a resume for an application. Many schools actually discourage them... Only make a list/resume of activities if it adds to what's already on the common app. Don't repeat activities, chances are they'll just get annoyed.

Thanks fhg, that's what I was thinking.

So does that mean it's okay for me to just leave all those spaces blank?

k, sounds good, thank you.

Most all of the type of stuff you have on a resume can be entered into a section on the common application. Having done that if you attach a resume then you duplicate a bunch of information. Plus the schools don't want to read about all the little items that your Mom thinks makes you special. Honor roll, art club, book club, pokeman club, soccer star right, etc - who really cares.

Just list your top 5 activities, clubs or honors on the common application and the admissions people have what they want to see. If any questions come up they will call your counselor and the counselor will basically say duhh, are you sure you called the right school? I never heard of them before so let me pull up the computer file ... oh now I remember why yes what a gift to the planet and such a wonderful person....

Thanks for the input Jben, but that's not how things really work at my school. We all have to send in (mail) a resume with our apps. So I'm asking if I should bother putting anything in on common app (and is it definitely okay to leave those areas blank?).

At my school at least, the guidance counselors (we've got like a dozen of 'em for our small-medium sized public HS) are really involved with their students and definitely know them all by name.

Don't leave the activity spaces blank. Fill them in with your most important activities...

I'm so sorry that I don't seem to be comprehending what everyone is trying to say. (I've had a total of 6 hours of sleep all week)

So it's okay to repeat activities? Because my GC is sending a hard copy of my resume to the colleges (which I am also uploading in the addtl. info. section). So in addition to these, I should include my most important activities in the spaces on Common App?

Again, I am so sorry for all the confusion! I truly appreciate everyone's assistance.

You shouldn't leave the spaces on the app blank. I wouldn't submit repetitive information in a resume (and certainly wouldn't mail and attach exactly the same resume), but it's your choice...

Oh man, I'm so confused. I can't really go against my school's policies regarding this... I'm gonna try to e-mail my GC, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a response today.

1) If you have already mailed a resume in, no point in attaching the same one onto your Common Application.
2) On your common application, still list your most important activities.
