I'm confused? I accepted awards on my university website and...

It had the X amounts of different programs like Bright Futures and the Pell grant and two other ones. I'm happy because it seems I won't be paying out of my own pocket after all.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if all these numbers are just estimates, or are my school and I expected to get the amount that is stated? Or would it all be recalculated to fit my needs? I'm going to be a full time student. To elaborate more, here's an example

Program 1 - 2770
Program 2 - 1300
Program 3 - 156
Program 4 - 1210

For a semester. Let's say my tuition was 2000 and books were 1000 but they gave me 1500 for books (made up numbers). Would I just get 3000 out of my awards and 500 dollars left over me to keep? Or would I get the full 5436 towards tuition/books and get what is left back?

I'd just like to know how this financial aid works lol.

Thanks for reading.

It’s too vague for me to answer the question. But why don’t you just pick up the phone and give the financial aid office a call. Ask them how the funds will be paid to your account and what happens if there are funds left over after tuition and fees. Also you are calling things Program 1, Program 2…no way to tell if these are grants, scholarships, loans, federal funds, college funds, outside scholarships etc. etc. etc. etc. so best to call your specific school and have them “walk you through” your questions.

Program 1 - 2770 - Pell Grant
Program 2 - 1300 - Grant
Program 3 - 156 - grant
Program 4 - 1210 - Scholarship

Are those your “per semester” amounts? Or are those the “per year” amounts?

If your EFC is 0 (or very near 0), it looks like that is the “per semester” amount.

If so, it looks like you’re getting some good aid. Almost $11k in free money.

Where is the Bright Futures amount? Is that the $1300 grant?

What is that $156? Is that SEOG?

Is this UFlorida or elsewhere?

I’m so sorry I was so vague. I should have addressed everything you said mom2collegekids.

Are those your “per semester” amounts? Or are those the “per year” amounts? - it is per semester

If your EFC is 0 (or very near 0), it looks like that is the “per semester” amount. - my EFC is 0

If so, it looks like you’re getting some good aid. Almost $11k in free money. - Yes it will be 11k

Where is the Bright Futures amount? Is that the $1300 grant? - I forgot the actual amount but I looked on the website and I meant to put in 1500. No, that is the First Generation Grant. Bright Futures will actually be 1140, it is the 75% medallion award. At first I didn’t remember the exact amounts so I put anything close to it.

What is that $156? Is that SEOG? - It’s the FSAG. Florida Student Assistance Grant. It’s a very little amount but I’ll take whatever haha.

Is this UFlorida or elsewhere? - Florida Atlantic University

*For a semester. Let’s say my tuition was 2000 and books were 1000 but they gave me 1500 for books (made up numbers). Would I just get 3000 out of my awards and 500 dollars left over me to keep? Or would I get the full 5436 towards tuition/books and get what is left back?
*

Let’s try to work with more real numbers…

Say…

semester tuition/fees … $2500
semester of books…$500

semester housing/meals.$2500.

cost of attendance…$5500 (without travel/misc expenses included)

Total from aid…$5436

In such a case, the money situation would be about equal. But, if the cost of attendance was a bit less, they would give you that extra money to use towards travel/parking fee/etc.

*Where is the Bright Futures amount? Is that the $1300 grant? -

I forgot the actual amount but I looked on the website and I meant to put in 1500. No, that is the First Generation Grant. Bright Futures will actually be 1140, it is the 75% medallion award. At first I didn’t remember the exact amounts so I put anything close to it.*

:)

now, I’m confused…lol…Are you getting Bright Futures AND First Generation? Are you changing the “Program 2 - 1300 - Grant” to a new amount? Should that be $1130 instead of $1300?

Will you be living at home or on campus?

On your FA award page, does the school list the breakdown of its Cost of Attendance? If so, please post that info…

should be like

Tuition/fees
Housing
Board/meals
books/supplies
travel/misc

Housing/meals? I will be living with my parents, would that made up number be lower (haha). Or was that just an estimate of my eating/personal expenses?

EDIT :

Let me revise that whole fake scenario I had with real numbers and real programs lol. I didn’t want to give too much information but it has seemed to cause confusion.

First generation grant - 1500
bright futures - 1140
pell grant - 2775
FSAG - 157

per semester

I will be living at home.

I found this on their website.

WITH PARENTS -

Tuition/fees - $4,200
Books - $900
Room/Board (meals) - $1302
Transportation - $2744
Personal Expenses - $1608

Total - $10754

edit : Oh crap, that’s for the YEAR by the way.

OK…since you’ll be living with parents, at some point the school will cut you a check for the amount that is left after they subtract for tuition and fees.

So, you’ll likely get a check each semester to go towards your transportation costs (car/gas), your books, and some food on campus. You should see if the school has a little meal plan for commuters.

I hope Swimcatsmom or Kelsmom weighs in on this…I’m not sure, but it looks like you’ll be getting 2 good-sized checks (like about $3400 for each semester) to pay for books, misc, travel, expenses.

Does that sound right?

For just tuition, assuming I take 15 credits it will be 2093.25 for a semester, and I calculated that to be 3478.75 for books and expenses. They give you a check with that amount? I understand the tuition goes to the school, but I had no idea about the check part lol.

Also, in all of this I forgot my initial question. If I spend, let’s say $3300. About 178.75 would be left over, would I get to keep that money? Or does it go on to the next semester? Or do I give it back?

Thanks for keeping up with me mom2collegekids lol.
