Hey everyone, I have a question because right now I'm really confused. So, every review I've seen says that Storrs is a really quiet town with barely anything to do, and that most people can only really find things to do on campus. I'm wondering how that's possible when Storrs is a 6 minute drive from Hartford, the capital city of Connecticut? Like sure, maybe DIRECTLY off campus theres only a few small shops/resturants, but I would definitely consider a city that is what, 10 miles away, to be part of the "surrounding area." And, there is great public transportation in Hartford, so I'm sure hopping on a bus into the city is not that hard or expensive at all, so even for fresh/soph who can't have cars on campus, there should be no problem. Could somebody please let me know if I have some piece of wrong information or if I'm not getting something, because it just doesnt make sense to me. To put it more as a direct question, doesn't being so close to a major city promote some nightlife/activity off-campus?? And if so, why have I been hearing about how "remote" UConn's campus is from the rest of the world??
Thanks for your help guys, I'm really confused lol

Uh no. You need to look at a map.

My mistake i just looked at one and its like 40 minutes away…oops, my bad but still, is there really nothing to do off campus or is that kind of an exaggeration? Like are there local restaurants and shops etc even if theyre small and theres only a few?

There are some shops and restaurants in the area that cater to uconn students. I haven’t read any of the reviews since we live nearby and I’m very familiar with the school and area but I’m surprised if people are bored, uconn is a very active campus and there is always something going on. Nearby towns like Vernon and manchester (20 minute drive) have tons of restaurants, malls and activities. West hartford has the nightlife (45 min drive). A car would be helpful. The campus itself is in a great location as you can travel 2 hours bus/train to boston or New York if youre looking for big city fun.

My DS is in his 2nd year… He is loving it and there is a lot to do and not just on campus. It is not for everybody but my DS got into a frat. Being in a frat has actually got him more involved with doing things with the school, community and well yes the frat things. He said it is all a balance and as long as you put your studies first everything else falls in line from there. This University is very much on the up-tick of a strong University.
