Well, hijack it back. :)

Why do you like UWF’s campus?

Why do you like UWF’s campus?

Then there should be no reason to complain about an ag school reporting ag monies to US News. ;)

I’m a UNF sophomore transferring to FSU in the spring of 2010.
I assume I can give you a pretty good idea of the school.

The primary reason I am leaving is bc I’ve lived in J-ville for a long time. I am sick of it here, and I really like the FSU campus. Not to mention the fact that I want to get away from my parents.
UNF has specific depts. that are really good. Like music, business, anthro. Each school has specialties. We are known for our music program. UNF is hardcore being built up. They just put in a new dorm with a lazy river, pool… all this extraneous stuff. We just got a student union. A lot of new buildings. The school is fairly new compared to FSU and UF. The campus is pretty, but far from the downtown area. It’s close to the beach. The academics are okay, but I don’t have any other school to compare it to… so I wouldn’t know. It’s a commuter school so having a car would be helpful!
I’ve had some amazing professors. It’s all about what is right for you… and only you can judge.

sophiegirl:

That is good to hear that there are now dorms and a student union. The main thing people seem to be complaining about is how it doesn’t feel like a real university, and with the recent changes that will probably start to change. I strongly believe that both UWF and UNF will work their way up. And I stick to what I said, I have a feeling UWF could raise to near FSU status in the years to come. Which would be awesome to have a great university all the way at the end of Florida :D

I’ve heard that it’s easier to get into UWF than UNF. I always thought that UWF was one of those accept-almost-everyone schools. UNF is getting harder.

If UNF is getting harder to get into, I guess that’s because FCCJ is now becoming Florida State College (I SOOO HATE THEIR NAME CHOICE!), so UNF has to raise their standards also.

However they gave out TONS of good scholarships to students from my high school who honestly weren’t that great. They were throwing out scholarships like they were nothing. Crazy.

Yeah I know a couple people who got scholarships… but I don’t know their circumstances. I know one of them didn’t have that good of grades, but she was in a military family :P

Florida State College is a dumb name. I will always know it as FCCJ haha.

Yea I think The College of Florida would have been a better name to associate itself with…
But same here, It’ll always be known as little FCCJ to me =)

What HS did you go to? Are you from JAX?

I am from JAX, but I’ll have to PM you the school

Yeah…my community college I am dual enrolling in renamed itself from Polk Community College to Polk State College.
Such a good name choice eh?

Polk State College is fine. It identifies the area it serves in Polk county appropriately. Florida Community College in Jacksonville using the name Florida State College though is a ripoff of FSU and leads to unnecessary confusion. Was the Florida State College named finalized and okayed by the legislature?

It is a wonder no Florida college has ever used the name “Pork State College,” which would accurately reflect the way so many Florida public learning institutions where truly created.

Yep…people from FCC will just say “I went to Florida State”…def a rip-off…hope more rational heads prevail.

Florida State College is a historic name of FSU. I find this totally unacceptable as an FSU graduate.

Florida historically has had higher education ruled by the Legislature. All the political ebb and flow and weirdness are reflected. This is likely why we have the rankings we have.

The name will likely be FS College at Jacksonville. :(

The term “university” sometimes synonymously used with “college” in times past now means something special in state law, it appears. State colleges are now prohibited from using the word “university”.

Yeah it sucks… That’s the official name, and all the Facebook networks are “Florida State College” now.
I took a test at FCCJ Kent campus today. They’ve got like 7 campuses all over town! It was a small campus, but confusing to navigate. A lot of older people in the class.

I think it was finalized as Florida State College (or is going to be finalized with no opposition).

However, I remember that there were some people, possibly FSU alumni, who contested the name, and FCCJ said they got an OKAY from FSU to use the name FSC.

I wonder why FSU gave an okay? If I ever graduate from FSU and try to get great a job in Jacksonville, people might think I mean FCCJ when I say “I went to Florida State.” I’ll probably have to be very clear and say “I went to THE Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida,” while wearing a Seminole tie.

I am also mad at FCCJ because THEY KNOW that the words “college” and “university” are used interchangeably.

CollegeBoard.com lists the following—

Residential Campus:

UF
FSU
UCF
NCF
FAMU
UNF
FGCU
UM - Private

Commuter Campus:

USF
FIU
FAU
UWF

UNF is totally a commuter school… so is UCF.

Couple of points:

Honestly who cares if FCCJ has been renamed Florida State College. Its not like anyone is going to confuse the two any way. Seriously one has national clout and the other is an overgrown Community College that offers a few Bachelor programs. Apples to oranges in my opinion.

Also I do not care what Collegeboard says: UCF, UNF, and FGCU are commuter schools.

It’s interesting. I did a little more research to see why schools such as FGCU and UNF are not considered commuter schools. UCF, I understand, since it offers the second most amount of housing in the state, behind UF. I think it comes down to the percentage of first-year students residing on campus as well as the percentage of total undergraduates residing on campus. A commuter school is defined as a school whose majority of students commute from home to class, then back home after class.
