I am very curious about what happens to my application after I click submit on, let's say, common app. What happens inside the admissions office?

It goes into a giant netherworld before it’s downloaded and filed in your applicant file. I don’t know the specifics, but I’d guess it boils down to a giant influx of applications near a deadline, a sorting phase, then a processing phase where your app is coupled with all the other pieces of your application in a file.
