Due to personal problems I'm failing my classes. Right now I'm taking History of Film, Abnormal Behavior, Intro to Psych, Psychology as a Profession (non-transfferable), Helping Relationships (non-transferrable) and I have a D or F in all of these classes. I'm definitely retaking these classes next semester though, so it won't hurt my GPA too much. However, will these F's look really bad and will it hurt my chances at getting into UCI, UCLA, UCSD, or Cal Poly even if I retake those classes and get A's in them? I'll be applying to transfer in the fall of 2008, so I'll have 3 semesters and 2 summers of grades to show the UC admissions people that despite having had a bad semester, I can do well in college. Also, I've just switched my major from psychology to computer science and I'm very confident that do well in the computer science prerequisite courses.

you better have a damn good reason to fail all of your classes, and if your personal problem is such to cause you to fail then why not get them dropped?

"'I'm definitely retaking these classes next semester though, so it won't hurt my GPA too much. "

No! If you get an F in a class, it WILL affect your GPA, even if you take it over again. My suggestion is take a W in all of these classes so it won't kill your GPA.

Can you withdraw? If it's not too late, definitely do that.

If he retakes the courses and gets C or better grades then his D's and F's will be replaced with his new grade, thus changing his GPA with his new grades. Although it will definitely look bad on the transcript, GPA-wise he will be saved. But I agree, even if you retake the courses and manage to get better grades, you better have "damn good reasons to fail all of your classes", or you will not look favorably upon, regardless of your new GPA.

^ So will I have a very low chance at getting into UCI or Cal Poly with the F's on my transcript?

Your best option as of now is to Withdraw from those courses and retake them next semester. If the withdrawal deadline has passed, then try your best and try to get your best grade. Rather D's than F's. You can still retake the course even if you get a D so at least show that you've tried till the end. And then retake the course and get an A.

What could possibly be your reason to fail all of your classes?

I went from a 4.0 to a 3.9 bc of a B+ in calculus because of a crazy week before midterms...death in the family, broke up with year long gf, best friend almost killed himself in a car accident, and I was hospitalized.

I hope your reason for failing all those courses was better than mine.

goodness me,.....you did VERY well under those extenuating circumstances, sorry to hear about those bad news.

i know if i was you, i would have gotten a.......FAIL

Wow, that was rude Jay1020.

If you get a D or F, and retake the course it will replace the grade (the F or D), and will not hurt your gpa. HOwever, on your transcript it will still show that you got an F or D, but that you made it up.

Socal girl is wrong, sorry.

Btw jay, phiur does not have prove their reason to us, it's not of your or any of ours business.

Although definitely a little on the harsh side, but many people have different issues going on day to day, yet they are able to get through them. I think that shows the kind of person one is. Failing all of your classes is somehting very serious, i can understand if you fail 1 or 2, but all of them is something different all together.

To the opening poster, if you have all Fs for this semester, you will pretty much reduce your chances of transfers by a LARGE percent. Especially if your reason for the fails are not thoroughly warranted. I would suggest digging it out hard and get Ds or Cs, talk to your professor and explain to them what is wrong, no actual professor really wants to fail their students.

good luck.

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

I just read my last post and I feel I should apologize. I didn't think it sounded rude while writing it. I really didn't mean to make phiur feel bad, and I understand you came here for help and not ridicule.

Take what everyone else said and apply it--curve those grades up as much as you can by having a one on one convo with each of ur profs after your next class. Explain to them your situation. Retake those classes and ACE them. When writing your application for transfer, attach a separate Additional Information page explaining for doing poorly this semester and how you illustrated your ability to perform by retaking those classes.

Good luck.
