i'm falling and can't get up

i'm new on this college confidential site, but i desperately need some advice on which colleges would take me. i don't want any bs, b/c that's what my counselor gave me.

i did great freshman/sophomore year with a combined 3.8 gpa. then, junior year hit, my parents had problems which in turn meant that they were never home and i had to take care of my brother. to make things worse, my grandma got lung cancer, so my dad went to visit her in oklahoma. through all this in my junior year, i got a 3.0 gpa.

i'm freaking out right now b/c i just kinda gave up 2nd semester b/c i got a D+ in AP Calc ab. but i got A- and B+ for every other course. i currently go to the toughest school in the state of indiana, but i'm just afraid that with that D+ i can't get into any college bigger than ball state. is that true??

You'll need a really, really good essay explaining your situation. That's what the "additional information" section is for.

which colleges could i get into though? would IU-bloomington take me?

I don't know the specifics, but I encourage you to apply to whatever college you want to apply. And like thomasc said, use the " additional info" section well.

@thomasc and anyone else with an useful response.

Say you had an extremely overly tough honors teacher who is in no comparison to any other honors teacher who caused a .3 point GPA decline, would top colleges accept that in the "additional information" section? My GPA would have been 4.0 if it wasn't for that problem... :(

I don't think colleges want to hear about a tough teacher [almost every student has one of these at some point].

Wait, is your overall right now a 3.0 or was that just junior year?

If it was just junior year, a 3.5 is still respectable. Just explain it and rock your standardized tests, and I think you'll have a good chance at IU-Bloomington

yeah, the 3.0 was just junior year and i got a 3.8 ave for my freshman/sophomore year.

thanks so much for the hlep.

They will take your hardships into consideration when reviewing your total application.
