I realize half this stuff might not make a difference in my chance of admission but I just put everything that is on my resume.....so do I have a chance?

Is that your UC GPA ? or is it unweighted ? because 83/600 seems high for a 3.3

Anyways, if your UC gpa is a 3.3 you will have a hard time getting in. The avg GPA according to Princeton Review is a 3.9 and collegeboard says only 9% admitted had a 3.0-3.5. the UC’s are becoming increasingly hard to get into…

chance my daughter? In State Los Angles
UC 10-11 gpa 3.86
9-11 = 4.12
ECs good (300+ hours volunteer work same company
Essay good
ACT 25
SAT 1720

it is not my UC score and it is weighted. BUT i only took like one non A-G class so I dont think it would change it that much. And i was hoping my SAT and extra-currics would bump me up

FINALLY A NORMAL PERSON :D. hehe I have around same gpa but higher SAT >.< and less ec, but personal problems :frowning: so good essay. Lets hope we both get in >:O and show people low gpa ppl can get in :D. plus im starting to lose hope on UCI and hoping for this school or UCD

with ur ec i give u 50-50 chance :) What major are you choosing, cuz that matters a little bit <.<

the last comment indicates the major you choose makes a difference? Is that true for SB? and other UC schools>?

well if you’re engineering it does, cuz you have to get in the engineer school <.< also. ALL UC’s say major doesn’t count, though in my opinion, diversity means they want a mix of different majors o.o? For example, I’m sure UCB aren’t going to accept every business or engineer person that probably would get in if theres one applicant who matches another applicant however the other applicant is maybe psychology.

my major is political science. and a 50/50 chance doesn’t sound to promising lol. I don’t want to be stuck going to Riverside… :(

I am just worried because it seems that state schools are starting to look more at GPA and less at test scores…or maybe this is just true for CSU’s

UCSB has pre-major GPAs for it’s popular majors to solve this problem. Also, many people change their majors after enrolling, so it’s hard to predict what major people will settle on. As a result, there’s no need really to select freshman applicants based on major.

Well its just my point of view :). Obviously I’m not a UC admissions officer XD, so I wouldn’t know :). Besides not all the UC has pre-majors for all their popular majors :). I THINK

Don’t worry Kathryn my stats are around the same though i have higher SAT >.<. I’d be happy with the 50-50 chance vs <50  when both our gpas are quite below avg :(. I don’t know the act conversion well, since I never took it, though I think 29 ACT is better than ur 1890 since UCB avg is a 30 i think o.o and their SAT avg is 2000something so i believe ur SAT falls around the 1900-2000 range. Right now ur ACT/SAT is barely above the average score unfortunately for that school :frowning: but ur ec makes it up :D.

“Also, many people change their majors after enrolling, so it’s hard to predict what major people will settle on. As a result, there’s no need really to select freshman applicants based on major.”

Engineering majors are a special case. They often have a different set of general education courses and are usually more rigorous than the L&S majors. I’m certain that there are some people who apply for less populated majors then attempt to enter the engineering school once they are accepted, but the major change process into the engineering departments is deliberately difficult in order to prevent this. Many colleges (some UCs and Cal States included) even require an essay to change majors.

As for the chance situation:

I’m a little sorry to say this but I would say you have a lower than 30% chance due to the fact that public universities like UCSB receive several thousand applicants every year (44,717 last year) and are much more number-focused - GPA and SATs are the heaviest factors, and are probably the only real factors. As another poster mentioned your GPA is far below average (3.93 according to UCSB), but at least your SAT and ACT is a tad bit above average.

For mayanao:

I must say that your daughter’s statistics are contradictory. How is that she got a 3.869 from 10th to 11th grade and yet received a 4.12 from 9th to 11th? Did she take all AP classes her freshman year? I’m going to have to assume that you flipped those. Your daughter’s GPA is great, but her SAT and ACT scores are a little weak. I would give her a good chance though, around 80% since 91.8% of applicants with a GPA over 4.0 are accepted into UCSB.
