I'm from California

Here's the proof:

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/apply/how_apply/personal_statement.html

This is an exact quote from the UC admissions website:

"The Personal Statement prompts will change for fall 2008 applicants. Make sure to read the instructions and prompts that apply to the term to which you are applying."

Now, there are 2 essay questions.

starting this fall, I get to tell people I'm from California!

Did my explanation answer everybody's questions?

fizix2: where you headed? also, you are not "from CA", you are "attending school in CA". Sorry, the first one is a novelty for those of us who were actually raised here lol. but anyway, what school are you going to?

I'm from Southern California and I'm staying here. I'm going to CSULB.

does anyone here live in Fresno?

reverberates: congrats! i have close family who went there and they loved it!

Your mom's from California.

She probably is.

wth??????? i obviously missed something there.

does Lemoore count? pretty close to Fresno

can you tell me what its like up there? im thinking of going to college in Fresno. from what I read it seems really agricultural. is it cold there? and is it crowded or have a lot of empty space?

Sweet home Alabama.

well, i've only been here for little less than a month, and let me tell you, it sucks ass; it's always in the 100s, really dry, corn fields for miles, & the air reeks of fertilizer. Fresno is a bit more civilized, but here in Lemoore, oh man, there isn't a damned thing.

^^Only in the summer. It get's fairly cold in the winter but I don't think that it goes below the 40s very much.

Oh boy...these 2 years are going to suck.

nhsharvard: But you see, that statement is ambiguous.

That can be interpreted in two ways: 1) They'll change for those who are applying for fall 2008 (that means this year's rising seniors), or 2) They'll change for those who are applying in the fall of 2008 (that means this year's rising juniors). I'd contemplated this issue and asked my college counselor, and we concluded it wouldn't make sense for them to put that warning up and yet keep the old prompts up; they would have removed them and put the new ones up. UCLA's site even says that the board has approved the new prompts, so they definitely have them.

eek! it doesnt sound like how i imagined it would be...
well, is there at least any good shopping there?

^^What's your definition of good shopping? ;)

I'm actually a little farther up north but if you're willing to trek to Sacramento, I can give you a little more pertinent info.

Hm, there's a Wal-Mart.

Sacramento is a good ways (2-3 hours drive) from Fresno. I don't know much about Fresno (or Fres-YES, as some of my friends who live there like to call it), but it tends to get made fun of a bit. It was named an All-American City pretty recently, though, which probably means that there's at least SOMETHING going on there. I'm sure there are pretty typical malls. But as for major "I came to Fresno just for the shopping" areas...don't get your hopes up. If possible, visit the area before you decide to go to school there.

The Central Valley is miserable during the summer, but it'll be fine in the fall, winter, and spring. Rainier and cooler than LA, dryer and warmer than the Bay Area, most likely.

Here's some more concrete info (climate, area attractions, and so forth): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresno,_California
