Are these too excessive and irrevlevant?

The Common App. asks that the applicants elaborate on "one" activity in the Short Answer Section. I didn't think one would suffice all that I have done, so I chose 3.

2006 Missionary Trip to Honduras: Traveled to the towns of La Cofradia and Esquapa and provided medical care and eye glass clinics. This trip was important to me because I was able to assist children who are living in inhumane conditions. I also received the opportunity to spread words of advice and encouragement.

In 2005, I raised $2,300 for the Gilda's Club. The club serves as a community meeting place for people living with cancer, their families and friends. This project was significant to me because my cousin rehabbed at the Gilda's Club when she had cancer. Though she passed away, she continuously credited the Gilda's Club as the primary reason as to why she lived with the disease for as long as she did (4 years).

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, I tutor High School student in various academic areas. On Fridays and Saturdays, my time is spent tutoring children in my community at the local library.

Ohhh... I am BLACK by the way. I thnk that boosts my chances.

My essays are pretty awesome. One refers to a single sentence that changed my life; the other shows how my determination stifled near death experience.

I will retake the SATs in Jan. I don't know what I will get. In all honesty, I do think I should get around 1300+. I am aiming for 1400, but you never know. I will practise for sure though.

Anything else I could do to improve my app? Mine seems pretty dull compraed to most people on here.

1300+? Don't you mean 2300+?

lol, not to be racist...but..an African-American as ranked one in his/her school. I think you're already in Duke.

he's probably posting this from the duke library lol. yeah, i'd agree. You're in.

i meant 1300/1600. Probably 2000/2400. I think it'll be higher though, but I don't like predicting my scores. I am a bit supersitious.

ALSO, I am first generation. Neither of my parents attended college, and my dad passed when I was 7.

Thanks you guys! I am not so positive about my chances. Many of my friends think I would get into just about any school in the country, but I am seriously doubtful. My SAT scores are quite dreadful. I don't think it truly reflects my itellect, but what can I do? You win some; you lose some-- I guess.

1950 isn't bad. I wouldn't worry about it, do your best on the SAT 2's. Good luck with that.

Hm...that kind of guarantees you're in, the first generation thing.

Really? Does being 1st generation help me a lot as well? Didn't really know that.

Does my father's passing have any effect? I don't think it does, but I could be wrong. Thanks once again.

Yeah, 1st gen usually means your parents aren't rich and had the money to give you tutors. So what that says about you is that you're hardworking.

If you wrote about it in your essay, it would show how you're disadvantaged compared to other applicants.

lol, off topic but...may I ask what your 5k record time was?

My best 5k time was 17:23. I started my freshman year running a little under 24. I didn't run this season because of illnesses.

I slightly touched on my father's death in my essay (and when I say slightly, I do mean slightly). I just mentioned his death in one sentence I think-- not even sure if I even did that to be honest.

**In the 8th grade, I ran a 2:15-2:20 half a mile.

holy jesus did you sprint that half mile?

How do you slightly mention something but don't even mention it in one sentence? are you talking about not having a dedicated sentence?

did no one notice that he is a "USAMO" Qualifier???

A black USAMO qualifier...in at almost every school.
I would highly suggest you retake the SAT, bc. if you qualified for USAMO, you're definitely not 640 math material.

Your SATs are normal and your GPA is awesome. Your ECs are spectacular too! You really should try higher than Duke haha. And your half a mile time is crazy!

What? 2:15 -2:20 half mile is not "crazy" at all... it's actually very mediocre. 5k time is solid though

Don't want to sound mean but.

USAMO qualifier, but a 640 on Math?

Something seems a little fishy

I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt though; we all have a bad day sometimes

It's fine NATO. It's not mean. 640 was undoubbtedly an extremely disappoiting score. But what can I say? I am a relatively slow worker. With that said, I have had As in all my Math classes, and got a 5 on the AB/BC exam. I know it isn't much, but oh well. Hopefully I improve that score next time around.

why take both math 1 and 2 for subject test?

and you like a fine candidate- you're a val !!

good luck

Yes CNI. 2:15-2:20 isn't that good. For an 8th grader, it's pretty impressive though. I placed 4th or 5th in "County's" (Final level of competition). I thought it was pretty impressive considering the fact that I "accidentally" made the track team. My try-out time was 2:27 but I had only run 600 meters instead of the full 800 (the coach must have miscounted the laps since our shcool had a 2000 meter track).

2000 meter track? whoaa.

I meant 200 meters. lol. I am obviously not typing well tonight. I am off to bed. Thanks again. Hopefully I will get in. I will bump this thread sometime in April. Bye.

Besides USAMO, he's also a finalist for the Chem Olympiad.

Nice work! You're in for sure.
