I'm going on academic probation

Wow, I guess it’s not so bad. I got done with Calc I, and it really builds on itself with derivatives. However, I know it’s hard for people to remember every single detail in a previous math class. So they don’t make the math applications problems too hard do they? And I wonder how long or what they do for engineering finals haha. Well, it looks like you’re well on your way in finishing the EE program.

I had a slightly similar experience. I was a government major and failed two classes – gave up and stopped going to those two specific government classes two weeks after the final deadline to “drop” (even with Dean’s permission under extraordinary circumstances). About halfway through the semester, I realized I hated government, researching about it, just spending time writing papers about the topics being covered. Even though I got Bs in my other two classes that semester, I was placed on probation because of the two Fs.

The school prevented me from registering for any classes for the following semester and sent me a letter to tell me to get my act together. Probably the best thing that could have happened to me as I clearly was not ready to go back to school right after that and dive back into a core curriculum. Got a job to spend the new free time I found myself and it gave me time to REALLY think about what I wanted to major in college. At one point I thought I wasn’t going to go back. Then I had planned going back and trying government again (since I already had 1 year finished of low-entry government courses and I didn’t want to start over in a new major) up until the very last week to before being “reinstated” when I realized my goals had always been to major in computer science, but changed course because I realized I was letting silly factors (“outsourcing,” friend’s recommendations, and so on) override my own genuine interest of computer science–which had been my original major to begin with (before changing to government in the very first semester).

I have yet to earn anything lower than a B in my three semesters since probation in my new major–the first semester “back” from probation was like I was in college for the first time again–a fresh new start, if you will. My GPA is now finally back up to the 3.00+ range and I’ve been on the Dean’s List in all three of my semesters since probation. I have 1 and 1/2 years left to graduate, even though I should have probably already graduated by now if I stuck with government and never failed those classes. I am in no rush though. My only worry is how those two Fs in Government will glaringly stick out on my transcript and explaining the situation to my future employer in how I lost focus and enthusiasm for that one semester.

***? You did a 180 on Computer Science. Those abstractions and theoretical nature and relation to upper division math would drive some people crazy. I don’t know how some people go through that, it really surprises me.
