what are my chances at UNC Chapel hill?
i want to major in economics, minor in math, and take pre-med electives.

Out of State- None at all, sorry.

If you are an NC resident: It will be a reach. While we in-staters have the upper hand in admissions, it is next to unheard of for anyone to get in with less than a 4.0 weighted. Your ECs are great, but they won’t make up for your GPA.

I have a good friend who had similar stats to you, except he had a 2140 SAT, he got rejected, and he applied second deadline so they saw he made straight “As” senior year in all AP classes.

If you live in NC you have a shot, but it is a long one at best. Apply 2nd deadline so hopefully you can raise your GPA to 4.0+

Also, if you want more advice, post it in the main UNC forum rather than this section. No one reads these posts, and the only reason I check is because in the summer the only people who post here are applicants looking for chances.

^ I agree with Tony, but if you’re male, a minority, and from an under-represented county in NC, you might have a slim shot of getting in. Especially if your school prevents you from taking AP courses (or not many are offered) and there isn’t an honors program. Otherwise there really isn’t anything that can be done about the GPA.

i live out of state :stuck_out_tongue: but i am a minority. would it help if i apply during regular decision instead of early decision? if i do that then i could work harder & increase my gpa to 3.7 or so UW & possibly over 4.0 weighted, since i’m taking 3 AP classes and 1 honors class this coming year. would that help?

I don’t think you’ll have a good chance of getting in. Your Ec’s are O.K not great tho. But don’t be hopeless, you need to raise your SAT and GPA a bit.

My suggestion is to major in sport medicine if you wanna go with pre med. It’s pretty easy and you can make it rain in the future. Minimum salary starts with somewhere near $266000

No, then I agree with Tony’s initial assessment. If you’re OOS, there’s almost no hope.

:P alright well here are some other colleges i’ve got on my list:
university of wisconsin - madison
penn state - university park
villanova
boston university
UC San Diego
wake forest
IU bloomington

which of the above would you say are safe/slight reaches for me? aka colleges i have a likely chance of getting into

^ No that’s not correct. My cousin had a 1850 on the SAT, a 4.0 W GPA and still got to Stanford. She lived in Florida. It all depends on how you respond to the questions they’ll ask on the Application. Tho you need to have atleast a 4.0 GPA.

so GPA has to be 4.0 weighted, not necessarily unweighted?
did your cousin get in solely on the application essays? or did she also have excellent ec’s?

^^ That’s misleading. Yes, there are some students who, despite having a lower than average GPA and a lower than average test scores, get into excellent schools, but there are almost always COMPELLING reasons why they are admitted.

what reasons would they be admitted for?

Overcoming poverty (which could explain the low GPA/SAT), coming from a severely under-represented area (which could explain the low GPA/SAT), having done some extraordinary EC, demonstrating exceptional talent in some area(s), being a minority (Native American, etc)-- any combination of these factors could/would be considered “compelling.” If you’re a Native American male from Wyoming going to a less-than-stellar school, with less opportunities than the vast majority of Stanford applicants, then there might be a compelling reason to give that applicant a chance. Similarly, if you’re a white female from Florida who’s won the Intel Science Contest, had a small invention selling on QVC (/“As Seen on TV”), and have won numerous awards for her robotics skills, MIT might snatch her up and overlook her 3.5 GPA. I could go on all day with these scenarios.

The point, really, is that Princeton could fill its entire freshman class with valedictorians with 2400s(/2350s) if they wanted to. If you’re not a valedictorian and you don’t have a 2400, you better have a pretty good case for why you should get that spot at Princeton anyway. See what I mean?

alright, yeah i see what you mean.
anyway, here are the colleges i posted earlier in the thread:
university of wisconsin - madison
penn state - university park
villanova
boston university
UC San Diego
wake forest

which ones out of the list above would you say are within my range? i live in indiana btw but money’s not too much of an issue so i’m looking at some better opportunities out of state. but i do have one indiana college as safety already.
i know i probably need some more out of state safety colleges on my list. any recommendations of your own? (preferably colleges that are good in economics & are favored by recruiters)

It is harder to get into UNC OOS than it is to get into Duke. There have been stories of people getting into Harvard, but getting rejected by UNC, not saying this is the norm, but OOS is VERY competitive, because there are only about 750 slots open for a large number of applicants (I believe I read somewhere that about 1/2 of UNC applicants are non-residents).

It is tough for an NC resident to get in with less than 4.0, and next to impossible for an OOS student. OP, go ahead and apply, there are exceptions to this rule every year, but they are far from the norm. Just realize that this is a far reach.

You could probably get into Wake. They are SAT optional, though would submit the SAT, your scores are within their IQR, and I know students with a lower GPA that have gotten in.

UNC Charlotte. They have a great business honours programme that you could make it into with your stats, and it is in Charlotte, which is the largest banking centre in the US outside of New York. The university has a great relationship with the banks and a finance/econ degree from there is almost guaranteed employment.

Also, for the cultural part of UNC Charlotte, it is my hometown university, so I make fun of it a lot (as do most people around here…), and I’m not a particularly big fan of Charlotte because I have lived here for so long. However, it is the biggest city in NC, and those who are not from here generally love the university and the city. There is stuff to do, and the university is at a great location.

how would you say wake forest’s econ/business program is? do they also have great employment & pay opportunities since they’re also in north carolina?
