oh, yeah, and you’re sooooooo right – your parents can’t have any idea how much more competitive it is at UT now as compared to 70’s and 80’s. Maybe it was still hard then once you got into the actual classes, but getting in was nothing like it is now. Well, just do so well at UTSA that your transfer goes smooth enough that they can’t say anything this time next year!

@Carolein–got to agree with you, the self-esteem thing does matter. Parents and the schools need to find a way to make those freshmen and sophs see what they are doing when they slack. My parents tried to, but I didn’t listen and didn’t think it would matter. My older brother was at UT back then and I couldn’t see all the reason for going there but changed my mind a few months ago. so I know that these younger ones need someone to help them see they may want higher rank and GPA later.

yeah UT is my dream school so i’m doing CAP, i’m 110% sure. (plus i already accepted the offer)

another thing is my brother slacked off and still got into the school he wanted to (Texas State) and i didn’t. granted it was 10 years ago, but they feel like we were both messing up (we were both in advanced classes in high school but never did our homework) but he still managed to go where he wanted to go. me? nope. i was going to apply to texas state just to be like “look, i got in too. happy?” but that’s another $65 for my mom to whine about.

i think schools that rank shouldn’t only give juniors and seniors their current GPA and rank. like… seriously? you’re gonna wait 2-3 years to tell me “you’re slacking, get your grades up” i mean it’s easy to see your report cards and such, but what freshman/sophomore is gonna calculate their GPA, then survey everyone in their class to see what their rank is? i think my school was just cheap and lazy and didn’t want to print out all that paper. someone remind me to become part of the PTA once i have my first child.

anyway, my mom and i aren’t speaking because i yelled at her, but i do need to sit down with her and talk about orientation, housing, the honors college, etc. the big thing will be housing… i do not want to live at home. she insists it’ll be too expensive but we don’t know how much financial aid i’ll get (probably nothing, mom made over 100k last year. not bragging because she doesn’t plan on spending much of it towards my education.) or if i’m getting any scholarships.

i just got a job at six flags but i don’t start until march and i’ll only be working weekends so i won’t make enough to cover much. anyone got any ideas?

I had a good talk with my 10th-grader this morning. He says he wants to go to UT like his big brother, but I told him his grades aren’t good enough. He said, “Gee, thanks, Mom,” and I told him I was just leveling with him. I told him he needs to try to get his grades up. I also mentioned that one possibility would be for him to move to Austin and attend ACC for one year, then try to transfer to UT and get in-state residency status for tuition. At least he’s thinking about things! jamtastique, I’m trying to be very respectful and not yell at thim! It’s so hard, though, when I can tell what a bright kid he is.

JJamtastique–well, one good thing if you do live at home during your cap year, you’ll be studying so much to get the necessary GPA that maybe your mom will let up some, plus you’ll be at class or studying and maybe won’t even talk to her much. Maybe just suck it up for a year and concentrate on the GPA?

Class rank being absent in the Northeast, where I am anyways, does nothing to help students.

From my county, the schools don’t rank because they don’t like the idea of competition amongst students. Well that’s interesting because everyone here is so quick to squash each other just to get ahead.

@citystudent, it’s funny that you mention that because just the other day i heard some of my peers acting really… well, butthurt because they were ___ people away from number __ and were like, asking around to see who was ahead and if they weren’t close friends they were plotting their downfall.

anyway, my mom has actually agreed to let me live on campus. she’ll make it work somehow. i just kinda… misplaced my immunization record so i can’t continue with my housing app just yet. whoops.

i’m faxing/emailing my letters of rec. to the honors college, so we’ll see how that goes.

Got CAPed… not really disappointed. I was accepted at A&M, but not for my first choice (BS architecture)… instead got in for liberal arts.

I wasn’t lazy but I think my course schedule was not science/math heavy enough. I took the most rigorous courses available… but unfortunately only honors were offered and i didn’t have an option at my school to take AP’s. My scores were sufficient (29 ACT)… but, my math sections were definitely weak.

Ah well… getting CAPed by UT isn’t too bad. Is CAP the final decision made by the school though??? My admissions counselor seemed to think that AFTER the CAP there was still another round of admissions in which one could potentially be accepted…? I’m not sure if my guidance counselor knows UT very well though…

The only other round of acceptances is for waitlisted students.
