Im having a major crisis

Heheh. See what I did there? Major..

Im currently majoring in Information technology and Minoring in Accounting.I would like to stand out when I am applying for a IT job with an accounting background. Im not sure if Accounting is what I really want.

I would like to one day be a manager and work up to top management positions. It sounds to me that Accounting is stable job, but it will suck your soul. No free time?

Also, im confused about the whole accounting process. I have the option of getting taking a CPA exam? What exactly is the benefit?

A minor in accounting won’t give you enough accounting credits/courses to be a CPA. If you want to be a CPA, major in accounting.

The reason accounting is a good minor for an IT or MIS degree is because many of the transactions/data that an IT system will process will involve accounting data and accounting controls. It is good knowledge to have for someone in IT.

If you like IT and only like accounting a little bit, you might consider IT Auditing as a career. All of the big audit firms hire IT grads to do the controls audit of the IT system as part of the larger financial statement audit.

You really should speak to a faculty member or someone else at your school to get some career guidance.

You need 150 credits to become a CPA and with a minor you likely don’t have all the classes you need to sit for the exam. Still, it is a good combination because your background in accounting will make you valuable working in IT and dealing with financial systems.
