I took the SAT in October and got a 2340(M:750, CR:800, W:790). I was a little bit sad about my math score because it is my best subject, but I figured that I still did well enough overall to not have to take it again.

Yesterday, my counselor encouraged me to try to take the SAT again, but I don't think I should. First of all, I think my 2340 was a fluke because most of my practice tests were in the 2200s. Does it look bad if I take it again and get around a 2230, but I raise my math score, thus raising my composite? Does it look better to just take it once and be done? Second, does it look desperate if I retake such an amazing score? I'm pretty sure I won't do as well. Will those extra points that I get for my composite for math really help me out that much?

So, tell me, CC, should I retake the SAT, knowing that I probably will do much worse, thus revealing that I'm really not as smart as my test scores make me out to be? I know that many colleges see every single SAT I take. Do colleges really ignore everything except the composite?

Since you feel ambivalent about taking it again, it seems that you are not really up for possibly not getting scores that are better, really only the Math is what you are aiming for.

50% of people do better a second time, 50 % do the same or worse but this is really based on people who do not have such stellar scores as yours. If you are applying to top schools that require all your scores be sent, then I personally would sit on what you’ve got rather than risk the potential drop.

Take the SAT 2 math test a couple of times and see if you can get an 800 on it instead.

Don’t take it again. I am shocked by your GC’s recommendation.
The schools are looking for a top range and 2340 is in it!
It will not help you if your super score is higher by 50 points (max) and your second composite is in the 2200’s. You will haveto submit both scores to get any increase in your Math to be included in the super score.

It’s a great score - I wouldn’t think you’d have to retake. Are you planning on taking any SAT II’s? If you take the Math II and do well on it, that will confirm that you know your math!

@PinotNoir, I am going to take Math 2 later this year. I’ve already taken Chemistry(800) and World History(800). Do you think that I should take some more subject tests to prove that I know other subject areas really well?

@onecot59, I was kind of annoyed that my GC would recommend that I do that. What do I really gain by getting a few more points? Will that really outweigh the problem of having a second worse composite? Also, consider the time that I would spend by having to prepare to take the SAT once more…

Does anyone know if colleges(particularly the elite schools) actually examine each test score when they review my application? Or, will they only be able to see my composite score? I’ve heard somewhere that before the application is reviewed, the composite score is assembled and put on the application by a 3rd party. Is this true?
