I'm in a dilemma!

I want to go to college in or around NYC.

I want to do something with the media.

My dream would be working for NBC or Dreamworks or anything of that nature.

I dont want to go to NYU cause it's way too expensive, i'll be paying for college on my own.

I will get some aid, but my parents keep telling me to go somewhere in PA (thats where I live) because i'll get more money.

I really want to go to NYC though, so can someone give me some good college choices for what i want to do?

Thank-you so much!

If you are lowish income, private schools will probably be cheaper or similar to instate public schools because of need-based aid. If you're not low income though, instate public schools will definitely be cheaper.

Thanks for the advice!

But could I have some college recomendations!

NYU may not be too expensive after they give you your grant money. Do an EFC calculation. Colleges all cost about the same out of pocket unless you get a big scholarship or something or go to an in-state public.

There is a SUNY school near NYC that might have what you want.

You should consider Syracuse U. Newhouse School. It is only a few hours from NYC.

The New School U. may be a good thing to look into... I'm not sure how they are with aid though. Maybe CUNY Hunter? I mean, its not the BEST possible education, but its pretty good for the price tag and its in NYC.

Anyone know how Hofstra or Marrymount Manhatten is?

Marrymount Manhattan is my friend's number one school. But he's going for dance, so I dunno.

Hofstra is on Long Island, not in New York City. If you are OK with that, it may work. Do you know how much need-based aid that you are eligible for? You could look at Pace. Fordham probably would not give you enough aid. Based on your interests, I agree with previous posters that NYU or Eugene Lang/New School University would be ideal. CUNY does not have any or many dorms, so you would probably be on your own. Practically speaking, you should consider Penn State. You could have a good college experience and get a degree relevant to your interests. It is a respected and affordable school. You could then hit NY City for grad school or get a job there, or both. It is going to be hard to attend college in NY City unless your parents can help financially or unless you are a truly outstanding candidate that schools will give huge aid to.

I looked at Penn State and really did like it.

I wanted interships with some big companys, and being that most are in NYC, shouldn't I go to an New York school?

Penn State is in the middle of nowhere.

Syracuse would be a really good option! It's more respected in NYC than most NYC schools. Euegene Lang could be a good choice too, although the environment isn't for everyone.

I'd also suggest looking at Marist. It's close to NYC, and they have strong media programs.

I'd actually encourage you to look at California too. There are just as any opportunities, and it's actually cheaper than living in NYC. Assuming that your stats are good, you'd probably get tons of money from the Cal State schools. I've also heard good things about Loyola Marymount and Chapman.

Look at Purchase's communication and journalism major. Purchase is a SUNY school really close to NYC (Syracuse is more than 2 hours from NYC), and the OOS tuition is still very reasonable. The kids are creative and funky. The liberal arts majors are less competitive than the fine arts majors for admissions. Most of the kids will be going into NYC often, and it is definitely close enough for internships.

Good luck!

A lot of internships are offered over the summer...so you could easily go to Penn State, and spend the summer in NYC or LA.

Does it really matter where i go for what i want to do?

Is Penn State a good school for the media?

I plan on working for a company like FOX, MTV, E!, or ESPN...and I've looked into pretty much all of the internships they offer. The internships are offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer. Most of them are offered in the summer term. Most of the qualifications seem to be a business, marketing, communication, or advertising degree.

I mean you would have more opportunities if you lived in LA, but if you stay in Pennsylvania...you're still going to have your opportunity.

I'm applying to Penn State, because they are a really good school, they are Big 10, fun college town, good social scene, huge football scene, the student body and atmosphere, and they have a great business school. They also have a good media studies program.

Since I prefer media to business...I've recently decided to major in Media Studies and minor in business.

good luck....have your PA school options, and then apply to one in LA and one in NY. Go to the one that works out for you.

Do not count on grant $ from NYU. They are notorious for poor aid.

You can definitely get a good education at Penn State...but I honestly don't think you should. If you didn't like it when you visited, don't go. Saving money isn't worth being unhappy.

As for the question of if it matters where you go - yes and no. If you have talent, you can get good media jobs no matter where you go. BUT -top jobs, such as the ones you're looking at, are hard to get, so it's helpful to go somewhere with a really strong media program.

I think Syracuse would probably be your best bet. They have one of the best communication schools in the world, it's fairly close to NYC, and you'd get better aid there than you would from most NYC schools.

Also, if NYU is your dream school, don't give up on it.

I have a friend who got accepted there last year, but couldn't go because it was too expensive. She wrote a letter explaining the situation, and they nearly doubled her financial aid.

Miracles happen.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I guess I'll just apply to a bunch of schools and see what happens.

I also have another question.

For what i want to do, (work for NBC, Dreamworks, some entertainment or media company), would it be better to major in business and minor in communications or major in communications minor in business?

I'd focus on media, as it's more directly related to what you want to do.

It depends on the school.

Loyola Marymount has strong programs in both business and communication....but LMU's marketing program has an emphasis in entertainment.

So in that situation I would prefer business.

But at the University of Miami, their communication school has a stronger rep, and has a media management major which actually combines the two.

Good Luck!
