I'll be junior standing in the fall. Currently majoring in journalism with a focus in marketing communications and television broadcast. I'm not sure yet if I want to go the news anchor route or marketing/PR. I've done internships for both and have really enjoyed both!! I guess all in all I'm just looking for a job that'll pay me well, offer good benefits, and be stable in this field.

With that said, I feel like graduation will arrive too soon for me to realize and I have not a clue about grad school. Since journalism isn't really a major that requires or recommends grad school, I don't know if I should bother taking GREs, looking into grad schools, etc. especially since I don't even know if I want to be broadcast or marketing comm.

There's a lot of info on grad school stuff for students that are in bio, business, finance, etc. but NOT for journalism.

Can anyone offer some insight for a lost journalism student?

There is no reason to pursue graduate school in journalism unless a) you want to become an academic in the field or b) you don’t have undergraduate training in the field.

As neither appears to be the case, avoid journalism graduate school like the plague. Particularly given that you’d be taking out another two years of student loans for a job field that is weak and underpaid.

No, go get a job. You don’t need an MS in journalism to be a journalist (you honestly don’t even need a BS in journalism to be a journalist these days). Go find a job in marketing or broadcast and work your way to where you want to be.

The only reason to go to grad school is if it will lead directly to the type of career you are seeking — where a bachelor’s alone will not. In the case of journalism, that is DEFINITELY not so. The way to proceed as an undergrad is to get at least 1 (and preferably 2) good internships at TV stations or profit/non-profit companies. Hands-on experience is absolutely critical. If you can get at least a semester internship in TV and another in PR, that will be what will help you decide between the two. Failing that, one good internship and in-depth shadowing the other.
