I'm in an internship from hell, please advise!

I'm a third year Elec Engg student, now interning with IBM (I know, I know ... great company, huge opportunity, blah-blah-blah). That's what I thought when I started. However, it's not turned out that great. I expected to work on cutting edge development stuff, but no dice. I am in the Network Support Services dept, and all I do is maintain servers, install softwares, do minor troubleshooting - not what I was expecting at all! I'm frustrated and depressed, it's a 16-month internship until Aug 2012 when I return to school for my 4th year. I'm just about ready to walk into a wall, please help! I don't want to quit, I want to complete my internship, but I'd appreciate any good advice to take me through the next one year.

Don’t interns normally start with menial tasks and work their way up? Is it a paid internship? I’m not sure expecting to work on “cutting edge development stuff” was entirely reasonable.

will you be doing the same thing for 16 months? or will you be moving around to different parts of IBM? How long have you been doing this internship so far? Is there an intern coordinator or a supervisor that you can talk to?

If this isn’t something you’re interested in doing as a career, look for other internships ASAP.

Good to know that is how you feel; we’ll talk on Monday.

You know what’s great idea?! Coming to a forum to complain about your internship instead of being professional and going to your supervisor to ask about exploring other departments.

Boo-hoo! Do something about it and quit complaining.

Thanks, I’ve begun to realize that I’d pegged my expectations too high.

Thanks, I look forward to talking to you Monday.

Thanks, guess I needed that. I’ll take your advice and quit complaining and look for solutions.

Was goose really your supervisor?
