excellent recs & creative essays.

Emory was my crazy reach, but a friend of mine got waitlisted with lower stats. So with that said, do I have a snowball's chance in hell at getting in? Or do I have a shot?

i applied for the journalism co-major too!
i think the only thing that could be a downer are your SAT scores, but if everything else is solid (which it looks like) who knows??

That writing score is really good- you should hope that they really do consider it instead of "waiting until we have more data to understand the writing section." I think they should just go ahead and consider it, but then again it was my best section too. Good luck

I'm waiting for Emory for journalism, too. The thing that worries me is that it's the only school to which I applied that doesn't admit directly into a journalism program (not to mention they're only looking for about 25 kids). I know all my other schools can figure, "who cares if she's not a math/science genius, she's a journalism major!", but Emory is looking to fit kids into their school, not a specific major, so that may not bode well for us. I dn, I guess it's just something to ponder while waiting at the mailbox. Good luck to you, tabla; fingers crossed for both of us.

I was admitted with extremely low test score stats and a 3.8ish unweighted GPA (I'm a first year right now). As for admittance to the journalism program, I've never even heard of prospectives being admitted to it. It's a program that you apply to during your first or second year at Emory. Good luck!

i got into fordham--lincoln center today too...they gave me crappier financial aid than i thought they would...only like 5,000/year (not including loans)...american gave me 20,000/year

ok you know you're getting antsy when you start dogging threads and stalking your own mailbox. In an effort to force the angst to subside, I'm posting stats. please post opinions.

unweighted gpa: 3.6something, good classes (APs in the humanities). Respectable prep school.
SAT: 2090- V:730 W:730 M:630<- ew.
Sent them my best essays and articles
Great recs and e.c.s
Went to Emory's debate camp, and the off-campus info sessions, in contact w/ an alumnus (alumn? aluminum?) and students
hook: columnist at the area newspaper, also on my school's honor council (Emory seems to concentrate on their honor code)
already accepted at Syracuse (Newhouse/Honors), Mizzou (Journalism Scholars), Lehigh (Rodale Scholar), and U.Miami (where my mom made me apply). Got those vague invites from NYU. Rejected from Medill at Northwestern with an explanation about balance in classes (Honors Calc and no science senior year, that might have done it).

Both of you guys should hope they consider your writing scores, but even without them you both have a good chance. Threekids'kid's scores still fall in the "Emory 25th-75th" percentile so I'm sure it's more than possible. Tabla's ECs should help a lot and even if the board scores might be a little lower than the averages, I would remain hopeful.

Yeah, ithink it i all p in the air because I got in yesterday with a 1870, 3.6 uw gpa, and very average ecs. i think I got in with my essay and recs because I am a white girl and I did not even visit.

^
-your SAT scores are great
-I really don't understand GPAs when they are given out of a hundred - my school does it out of 4.0
- what is the other "crap" on your ECs? Do you have any leadership positions?
- You got suspended? Eeks. That alone might scare the admissions counselors away, plus I doubt your guidance conselour recommended you highly. :(
