I posted something similar to this back in November or December I think. Let me begin by listing all of my college credit that I've earned so far.

AP English Language and Composition 3: 8.0 Quarter Units
AP Spanish Language 3: 8.0 Quarter Units
AP US History *3: 8.0 Quarter Units *

Art 102 (took at some local CC) A: 4.5 Quarter Units

So far I've got 28.5 Quarter Units and I will be taking the AP US Government, AP Comparative Government, and AP Calculus BC AP tests next month which will allow me to accumulate 16 Quarter Units. If I do well on the tests in the end I should accumulate 44.5 Quarter Units and so far I've gotten one A which should help my GPA once I go into CC.

I'm currently a high school senior and I got reject from UCLA but if all goes well I'll have finished one year of college by the end of next month. My question is, if I want to go to a Community College and I only want to spend one year there, how should I go about setting up my schedule? I mean, I would not want to send my AP scores to UCLA and then send only about a few CC grades (because that's what they'll mostly judge by) and then get rejected because I only sent in a few CC grades. Question is, how many courses should I take in Summer School and during the Fall semester? Will the Fall semester grades count for UC evaluation? Should I take two courses during the summer and then four during the fall semester? That would come to a total of seven grades including the one I already earned from Art 102. Should I take night courses?

If anyone could please offer some advice or better if someone did CC in one year and then transferred in as a Junior help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and by the way, I'll probably be attending LACC.

First you would have to take your prereq classes for your major. What is your major?

I don't know anyone who has transferred in one year but i know for a fact that it is possible to transfer after one year at a cc to a uc as long as u meet the 60 semester units or 90 quarter units. It seems to me that you'll be able to do that. For impacted majors, i think it will be harder to transfer after 1 year at cc because it is more competitive. You have to finish most of the major prereqs in order to be competitive. If that major happens to be a science you'll have many classes to take. But if the major is toward the non science area, you might be able to finish all your classes in one year.

In addition, for impacted majors, they prefer that you take all the prereq classes for a letter grade not for a credit/noncredit grade. So if your ap classes happen to cover one of your major prereq classes i think its probably better for you to take the class instead since they'll have so few grades to base you on.

As for the number of classes you need to take, it depends on you. For summer don't go beyond 8 semester units (around 2 classes), unless you are really smart and can handle a lot of classes. For fall i say a good number would be 16-18 semester units which is around 4 classes. Five may be classes may be too much unless u can handle a lot of classes. For night classes, it depends whether you can stay awake during a class at night. Some people love it some hate it. So use your best judgement.

UCLA will look at your summer and fall grades and sometimes even winter. This is the semester system i'm talking about (we have two regular semesters and summer/winter intersessions). I do not know how they look at the quarter system.

I hope this helps. Good luck :)

Btw, if you haven't heard about ratemyprofessor.com use it to select your professors.

Thank you for being very informative. In fact, I'm not sure if you remember but you replied to my thread back in December on this very same question and you were quite helpful!

o really i don't remember replying to your question. haha. If u don't mind me asking what is your major?

i hope you are feeling better about your rejection. I know how u are feeling right now. I was in the exact same position as you are right now one year ago when i was a high school senior. I didn't get into the universities that wanted to get into (the top 3 uc's of course ;) ) So here i am at a cc hoping to transfer next year. I'm a science major so i cannot finish all my major prereqs in one year despite my ap credits. I wish you the best of luck. Just prepare to lose your social life for one year :D

TAP will get u priority review for ucla, but if u join tap u might not finish in one year. You have to take "special classes" in order to be tap certified. This could take forever if u have no priority getting into these classes.

Tap will help u since business econ is an impacted major. You'll probably have to take most of the major prereq classes for econ in order to get in. Well its not as bad as the science majors where u have to take tons of classes.

kaitylin, what do you mean they won't? Unless u mean as a sophomore, then yes ucla does not accept people who have been at a cc for one year. As long as u meet their 60 semester units/ 90 quarter units you can transfer. If you happen to meet this requirement in one year, which username01 probably will, u can transfer as a junior.

UCLA most definitely will let you transfer after a year. I'm doing it with okays from UCLA, Pierce College, and I've already been accepted to UCs. To transfer after a year. Make sure your APs are counted at UCLA and log the number of units that they count for there. Then make sure you transfer them at your community college so that they count towards IGETC. Since it looks like you have 45.5 quarter units to go... take the necessary amount of quarter/semester units. It REALLY looks good if you get a 3.8+ GPA, TAP Certification, and complete IGETC by Spring of 2007. It seems overwhelming at first, but with that many APs it should be cake. Do as much, if not all of your major prep classes taken from ASSIST.org. With your stats, a 4.0 GPA and everything completed should be cake. I took 18 units my first semester and it was so much easier than the APs I took in high school. You'll be fine and own all your friends who are going as a freshman since you'll be saving money, skipping a year, and possibly graduating early. Good luck. I'll be happy to help with any other questions you have.

The problem is you'll spend 4 years at UCLA.

If you don't finish IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) you'll have to finish UCLAs gen ed requiremnts at a college of UCLA. (Not all courses offered at UCLA will be offered at CC to finish Gen ED requirements).

Also there are not many spots for sophmore transfers so you must keep your GPA very high.
