I'm just doing this to depress myself even more. (What are my chances?)

So I'm at the pinnacle of my high school career, and the biggest regret is that I developed senioritis during my freshman year. Haha. I'm kind of looking into private colleges because I really would like to major in English Literature--I'm not even looking for any spots on the Ivies (I am realistic in that respect) but I do wish for a miracle that would get me into NYU (not very realistic in this one).

As you can see, my life is mediocre-ly good. My transcript is sprinkled with a healthy mix of B+'s and A-'s, and I've taken way too many art classes and not enough APs, but whatever.

College Class Year: 2012
High School: Public
High School Type: sends some grads to top schools
Will apply for financial aid: Yes

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 3.90
GPA - Weighted: 4.45
Class Rank: top 10% -# 15
Class Size: 877

For AP Euro, I got a mediocre score of 3. (I would blame it on my incompetent teacher, but I believe that my laziness had a more significant part in my failure)

Other AP classes I just took are English Language and Composition and Biology.

Classes that I'm taking next year are: Newspaper, AP Eng. Lit, AP Spanish, AP Calculus BC, AP Gov and Econ., and physics.

Scores: (which are pretty much a joke. What's funny is that my highest score, which is math, turns out to be my least favorite subject)

SAT I Math: 650
SAT I Critical Reading: 630
SAT I Writing: 620
ACT: 29

Extracurriculars:

Significant Extracurriculars: Piano 11 years, Polynesian dancing 8 years, ballet four years; flute, saxophone, French horn, two years each, Political club, Bottles for the Bay Club, Spanish club, newspaper.
Leadership positions: Founding President of a contemporary literature club (which is really just a feminist book club), Activities Commissioner Octagon Club two years, Vice President Octagon Club one year
Volunteer/Service Work: Church functions, teacher's assistant to religious education class, plus various other stints at the Ronald McDonald's House and the Relay for Life
Honors and Awards: National Honors Society, CSF
College Summer programs: Attending community college courses this summer and probably during the fall of my senior year as well.

Colleges of Interest:

Sarah Lawrence College
University of California - Santa Cruz
New York University (I know this is one hell of a reach)
University of California - Los Angeles
Various other UC's, I guess. Except for UCR.

So... what are my chances? Of course in my essay I'll be really pretentious and allude to Tolstoy and other classical writers which will either earn myself brownie points or screw myself over even more. Just kidding, though. I plan to do some serious soul-searching this summer in order to inject some humorous profundity of sorts. Okay, now that was pretentious.

If ever a school exists that has excellent but under-used academics, a pretty good reputation, and an acceptance rate of 80%, I wouldn't mind going there just to look better in relation to others. And that's the sad, sad, truth (of which I definitely will not convey to an admissions counselor in my application)!

THis is your freshman year... wow

Oh I'm sorry, I should have clarified. I'm actually a junior, yet I have been lazy since freshman year.

Man, I would have been happy to have done half of these things as a freshman!

that is still good. i am trying to take honors and AP classes, but my school has a small amount. You will have a shot getting into UC's and almost easily to other great schools. NYU will be hard to get into. You have a weighted GPA thats great, but tens of thousands apply there every year. good luck next year and good luck for your future career. I hope i can do as good as you

I think you have a good chance at NYU ad SL, but not a good chance of receiving financial aid. They reserve most for top applicants, urms and athletes. Your state schools will be way cheaper.

Sarah Lawrence looks good, especially because they don't require SATs. NYU is a bit of a stretch. You could get in, but you aren't good enough to be a canidate for one of their large merit scholarships.

UCLA, even instate, probably isn't going to happen.

Are you in California? Definitely thumbs up for Santa Cruz.

If you apply as an Art major at NYU, you are a lock...you could transfer majors. You said you had a lot of art classes, and they don't need SAT II's for art, so you could send just your ACT, which is within their range pretty signifigantly.

You have a nice shot anywhere, but as I'm sure you know, admissions are capricious. I wish anyone luck in this terrible year that we have to apply in. (more seniors than ever before) good luck my dear!

and for that school with "excellent but under-used academics, a pretty good reputation, and an acceptance rate of 80%" I would recomend looking into RPI(67%), Lewis and Clark(58%), Whitman(48%), The University of Florida(48%), Oxford college of Emory (a divison of the Emory University which is a two year school on a seperate campus, but after two years you transfer to Emory and get your undergraduate degree from there-around 70%, with an Emory Degree!)

I don't think UCLA is that much of a reach. Though you have a slightly weak SAT score, you have a strong GPA/rank. UCLA would be a high match to a match. You have pretty good chances at the rest, and UCSC is a safety.

Wow, thanks for making me feel a bit better, all. I pretty much figured out that NYU would be really hard to get into. As for applying as an art major to get in... that's a very interesting scheme. My cousin got into UCLA as a Computer Science major but then switched to English when she realized it was too hard. Hmm. But I do agree... UCLA is probably as long of a shot as NYU, from my perspective.

And the financial aid, yeah. I know I'm not getting any, because at my high school, asians are not really considered a minority. We're over represented.

Anyway, I'll definitely look into Oxford college of Emory. My English teacher recommended it to me...

Oh! I forgot to add a few more things:

If by some chance fate kissed me on the head with a better SAT score, would schools like Berkeley even consider me? I've decided not to touch my ACT score because of my dismal performance in the science portion. However, I have planned to go nowhere without my Barron's SAT prep guide this summer.
