Hi, I’ve been looking for schools that have late admission deadlines, because I started this application process only a few days ago. January 15, seems like a hard target to send everything to the schools by. I’ve only found 3 schools that have late application deadlines (Andover, Middlesex, Hill School). I have a 3.8 GPA, got 99% on both of the SSAT and have decent extracurricular activities.
I keep getting notices that someone has posted on a thread (this being one of them) but when I go to the thread that comment is not visible…is anyone else experiencing this!!! It’s like a phantom poster!!! (Which we can now dub PP)
Our DS decided to apply to Deerfield a month after the official deadline. He was fortunate enough to get an interview, and surprised to be admitted. He ultimately enrolled at DA after going to various revisit days. You may want to explore DA, if you have not already done so. Be persistent if you are interested. Good luck.
My daughter decided to apply to schools in late February. I ignored all the dates and deadlines and emailed every school of interest explaining the situation and her candidacy in brief (why she decided so late, her stats and activities, etc.)
Several strong schools actually let her apply for the mar 10 regular decision date along with the rest of the pool. It was hard but she did those applications in 11 days. Of those schools she was accepted to several excellent ones (not considered the very top around here but way up there academically - she would have attended one of these for sure). She was also waitlisted at her top choice (considered “top tier” on these boards)
Most of the rest of the most popular schools (Eg DA, Choate, Middlesex, Lawrenceville) showed their interest toward or around April 10 when they knew their yield and how many they’d be taking from the waitlist. Most claimed if she got on the waitlist it would be on equal footing with others on the list so she would still have a good chance if they went to the list. We didn’t end up dealing with those wait lists bc her top choice where she was already waitlisted on mar 10 offered her a spot April 10. It was thrilling and we feel so lucky.
My humble advice from what we went through last year navigating a late start :
have a very simple reason why you are late (Eg it’s not a backup school or plan)
avoid asking for Financial Aid if feasible
push for interviews, even Skype ones
firmly offer to visit campus so they know you’re serious
ignore everything on the website and trust that schools want kids that fit best. Most are willing to consider a well-fitting candidate to the greatest extent possible.
clarify with schools that say you can “apply for the waitlist” whether you would be put on even footing with other WL kids or below the latter group. For top schools with big lists already, I wouldn’t bother if it’s a subordinate waitlist status.
Be tenacious and persistent, yet respectful and kind with a very can-do and flexible attitude. It works! My daughter is so happy at her school and when she arrived tons of faculty knew her as “that girl that applied at the 11th hour because xyz circumstance and never even visited campus or had an interview”. (They were not willing to skype and a campus visit wasn’t feasible that time of year due to my daughter’s commitments.) The admissions officer said she had been waitlisted bc she didn’t visit campus and they usually consider that lesser interest. Her calls and emails while on list made it very clear she would attend if offered. This is a huge thing - late in the game people want to know they are first choice and you would definitely attend if offered. Be honest but if you loveva school show your enthusiastic!
Kent School always leaves room for flexibility. I have never known its Admission office to be unreasonable. It’s like @onevera pointed out re the importance of having a good fit. I know… I am a broken record about this (does “broken record” term even make sense to people under the age of 35?!)
