I'm Missing the whole first week of school! :(

I'm an incoming junior at the Louisiana School of for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA). It's a state-run school for high ability students that ranks in the top 20 high schools in the U.S. and is in the top of 5 of the 25 or so schools like it run by other states. Students at the school take college-level classes and live on campus.

Anyway, I was all ready to go to school on Thursday night when I started feeling severe pain in my lower abdomen. The pain kept me up all night and at 5:30 the next morning, my dad took me to the E.R. After a bunch of tests and being injected with every known substance known to man, it was determined that I had appendicitis. So I had my appendix removed at around 2:00 that same day (Friday) and returned home this afternoon (Saturday). I was on a lot of pain initially, but now I am on the mend. The only problem is, my doctor won't let me go to school next week!

As a fellow CCer, it pains me to know that I am missing so much school, especially at such a crucial time. Any other student would probably rejoice if he or she were told they had to miss a week of school. However, I have never missed this much school at once before and am really worried about how much make up work I will have. My school is notorious for being challenging.

Is there anyone here who has missed a big chunk of school like this who can give me advice? Do you have any tips on the best way to make up work? I would normally do as much school work as I could while at home, but my school is 4 hours away and I don't have my textbooks yet.

Chill out, I used to miss out school for six months each year till the 10th grade. You'll do just fine.

Ah don't worry about it. Most teachers upon hearing what happened to you will help you get back on track and probably excuse you from the homeworks you missed.

You'll spend a week catching up and that's it.

I don't know what it's like at your school, but the first week of my school (and many others) is just going over rules and regulations, getting acquainted with your schedule, teachers, etc...

Chances are, if you're missing the first week of school, the amount of real hardcore work that you'll have to make up will be little to none. Of course, I don't know how your school differs, but I'm sure you won't have much to make up.

Yes- Katrina. Don't worry about it- nothing bad happened.
And btw, I despise your school. :D

Thanks for the encouragement. What school in the New Orleans area did you come from? Which school did you go to after the storm?

Most people seem to either really like the Louisiana School or really hate it. Some people scream "elitist" when they hear the school's name, but the school really isn't like that. Narcissists at the Louisiana School are very unpopular. Is that why you despise LSMSA, or do you have a different reason? :)

I agree...the first week is not really that hardcore. :) I bet you'll be fine.

I suggest emailing your teachers --if you already know who they'll be-- to let them know that you'll be gone the first week of school and why. Not only does it show initiative on your behalf, but it'll make them more inclined to give you extra time to catch up. Also, they'll be able to tell you what they're covering during the first week, and you may be able to do a lot of it from home.

You ruin any chance we have at the state mao competition :) Baton Rouge Magnet does that too...
(Or it could just be that we're ridiculously small, but that's besides the point).

And I go to a tiny private school, you probably haven't heard of it. (I evacuated to the north and stayed for a year).

I had pneumonia this past year (my senior year) and I was absent for the week and a half right before our winter break, where we basically have to take all of our quarterlies, and get all of our work in to be graded (including artwork, which was a really big pain). As long as you stay on top of the work and are aware that for at least a week you're going to have to kick it into overdrive, it's more than feasible to get the work done.
That being said, relax, rest, and I hope you feel better and have a very speedy recovery!

Have a parent go to your school, pick up your textbooks and assignments, and get to work while you're away.

you're definitely better off missing at the beginning when it will be a lot easier to catch up.

it's the first week of school, relax. I think you're worried about nothing and what is so "crucial" about the first week of junior year?

=( first week of Freshmen year is essential... T_T where it's pretty much the easiest to make friends

The first day is always nothing so that leaves you with missing 4 days. The second day will probably have light homework, so you wont be missing anything too crucial most likely. The first week is probably the best week to miss in my opinon. PLUS you have a justified excuse so no worries mate.
