Hi. I just got my award sent to my Financial Aid portal, and it looks a little suspicious.

Federal Pell Grant

Direct Subsidized Loan

Federal Pell Grant

SPRING 2014

Direct Subsidized Loan

SPRING 2014

The Federal Pell Grant looks okay, but I applied for $3500 in Subsidized Loans - I'm getting less than 2000$ of that! I really need the rest for food/transportation. My EFC is zero as well, so Im a little panicky right now. What should I do?

Are you at a CC? that may be why.

What is your school’s COA?

Call your school and ask. The offices should be open this week.

According to my Financial Aid Portal, my estimated need is $7,364.00.
I am going to a CC, and normally the expected tuition is $11,199. However, I didn’t go to Fall Quarter so I’m only doing Winter/Spring.

Go to your financial aid office and ask how you can get the full Direct Loan. They will be able to tell you.

Also, what are the costs for tuition/fees for your CC?

Let me throw out a couple of thoughts. If nothing else, they might be able to help you frame some specific questions.

You are not going to school for the full year. Would your aid be pro-rated because of that? (you get 2/3 instead of the full amount because you’re only attending 2 of 3 quarters).

You should be able to get the full amount of UNsubsidized loans. Ask about those.

Is tuition at your community college really almost 12K or is that the total cost of attendance for the full year?

*According to my Financial Aid Portal, my estimated need is $7,364.00.

If your “need” is 7364, it sounds like that is the portion for 2 quarters.

But, your aid that you’re getting is less than $6k…so go to the FA office and find out. Be sure to ask if you can have the unsub loan…maybe that’s the issue.

I believe $3500 is the subsidized limit for first year students.

The amounts shown for the Pell ARE prorated. The OP is receiving 2/3 of the annual Pell amount.

OP…head over to that financial aid office TODAY and get this sorted out.

Okay guys, good news. I spoke to a woman on the phone, and she basically explained what happened.

I don’t have much money to begin with, so that means I was put onto Washington’s State Need Program, which gives you more money after your EFC is calculated. I qualified for it, however I was put onto the waiting list since I got my stuff into the school after July (October). The waiting list is apparently long, so they took into account that I’d be receiving the rest of my stuff later on without having to dip into any loans.

I was given the option of waiting it out, replacing all of my State Need Award with the loans I originally signed up for, or in the case I chose, I just replaced the Need Award estimated in Winter Quarter, rather than both Winter And Spring.

It’s good that they were able to get back to you so fast with informationa bout your case! Good luck!
