Im obsessing - Will I get into Davis?

Currently a Junior (class of '10)
-Small, competitive private catholic high school
-3.63 uc gpa weighted ~might go down after finals to 3.5 ish
with honors chemistry, honors spanish 3, and AP US history jr. year

APs/honors sr. year will be:
AP Calc
AP Gov
AP Environmental Science
Honors Physics

-(I took honors algebra 2 and honors spanish 2 sophmore year, but they aren’t uc approved so I already took the honors credit from them out of the uc gpa)

-3.81 weighted school gpa (with religion classes and extras ill explain in a sec)

-SAT 1890 (plan to bring it up in the fall)

-ACT 28

-taking SATII’s this weekend: US history, spanish, and math II

-at least 200 hrs (will be more by the time I apply) over 2 years volunteering at a hospital in my area
-youth supervisor at that hospital on my shift

-Black Belt in an obscure style of martial arts, been training about 6 or 7 years now

-assistant instructor at my dojo (non paying) ~50 hours, but will do alot more this summer

-Member of NHS for 2 years

-Secretary of NHS for 1 year

-Ran cross country for 1 year

-Ran track for 3 years

-won an academic award in religious studies jr. year (when I said school GPA, that’s with the A’s from all the religion classes I’ve painstakingly endured) but will UC’s even care about an award in this? -_-

-member of model United Nations for 2 years

I have a C in both semesters of Honors algebra 2 (which really annoys me that I do not get UC honors points for it), a C freshman year in honors english 1 (irrelevant for UC gpa), and might end up with a C in honors chem this year depending on how my finals turned out.

If It helps any, although I go to a private catholic high school, I am a minority and raised by a single parent and NOT financially well off. Our school uses a decible system, in which I am in the 2nd rank of.

I would like to know the chances of getting into UC Davis. I was very entranced upon visiting it a couple weeks ago. It is my top pick atm.

Also, if my SAT doesn’t go up by much, is my ACT comparatively better so I should send it in instead of the SATs?

EDIT: I should mention that because it is a Catholic school… We do have 6 classes every year, but only 5 UC approved because Religion class has been raping applicants from my school by limiting us. The school was even thinking of imposing a mandatory 0 or 7th period -_- as if it wasn’t hard enough to get in.

what is ur intended major?

I was advised to go for human/enviro/food/developmental sciences while filling prereqs for biomedicine stuff. I intend to go on to grad school, so tbh, I’m very open to any major in the science field, even social sciences.

EDIT: Lets just hope that finals went well, it seems that i keep cursing at the calculator for giving me unacceptable GPA’s, although its my fault

well the sciences are very hard to get into. lots of 4.0 ppl are turned away bc of their major choice.

so i suggest putting a favorite major as first choice,

and a major in a different college as ur second (ie engineering/science and arts or social sciences)

you are a strong applicant, remember to “toot your own horn” in your application, and hit them with everything you have

Good Luck

I don’t quite understand the fact that 4.0 ppl get turned away all the time, yet I am a “strong applicant” lol. I know you’re trying to be encouraging nor can you know for sure who will get in, but this seems to be contradictory

well, the 4.0 ppl, and ppl like you, seem to generally be turned away for the sciences, bc they apply for 2 majors in the same college. if they had, say, applied for english or something they would have been a shoo-in.

yeah bad word-choice. strong i guess i mean, in general, and you have a shot if you play your cards right i think. you have applied yourself in things you enjoyed, and worked hard, be proud.

Thanks for that! So, would you really suggest english as a second choice major? It’s not something I’m terribly interested in, but if it gets me in…lol

Do you know how competitive business or social science related majors are at Davis by chance?

well idk specifics, i just know that the College of Engineering/Sciences is the most competitive for admittance

There’s a thread on here for this year’s acceptances/rejections, that might help you out

Where else are you wanting to apply?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-davis/666858-official-2013-decision-thread-stats-only.html

I’m also interested in UC Irvine and Riverside, but havent actually visited either

You might also check out UC Santa Cruz as well.

Business and social science majors - depending on which specifically - can be competitive. Since you just finished your junior year, you cannot really change the grades part since youre applying this fall, but try to get a higher SAT score or work really hard on your personal statement. I do admit your GPA is a little low, because the avg for the incoming freshman was a 4.0. But, I definitely think you can get in. The thing they didnt tell me in high school was how hard it was to get in undeclared vs lets say engineering. of course it will make a difference when you apply, but like someone said above, what you put on your application can make a difference…

How about this, what would be the easiest majors to get in on? lol

I think that the Ag school might be a little easier to get into, so maybe animal sciences or environmental sciences, or, I would guess the safest of all, undeclared major but in the Ag school. Be careful about applying for a major you don’t want, because they tell you that you can’t change majors within the first year. That’s one reason my D went with undeclared.

There are pros and cons for being undeclared by the way. IF you want to get into classes that highly impacted majors, for instance, design, only those specific students in that major can register for such classes pass 1 (First round of registering for classes). Just so you are aware

3.5 Academic
3.3 UC Gpa

1610 Highest Sat Score
26 Highest ACT Score

Math II: 590
English Lit: 540

Badminton 4 years Varsity with leadership
Took Euro and English AP classes. Only took English test and got a 2.
Weak senior year.
Chinese
Born in China

Mediocre community service.

ABSOLUTELY HATE AND NO KEYCLUB OR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY CRAP.

Human development major

Accepted.

Essay: I liked it and it brought my major Human Development, badminton and background together.

I’m so proud of myself.

Got denied at Cal Poly Panoma though too. Whats going on with that?

Edit: I’m just a lucky person. =]

Edit: I also had PE AND Weight Training my senior year. All in the first term. My school has 4 total classes a day. =]

BrioCloud:

You make me very hopeful. I’ll try to go into through a major I enjoy, but I will definitely consider human development now.
