I'm only taking 4 classes????

I got my schedule last week and I am only taking four classes. My plan is to transfer into the business school and I am going to take the prerequisites, but I can't start that until I take one semester of precalc because that's where I was placed.

I am taking expos, precalc, into to business, and then spanish. At the APA day I wrote down that i'd like to take a FIGS or a Byrne seminar but I didn't get them.

I told my parents this and they kind of flipped out because isn't 4 classes only 12 credits? They are mad because they don't want me wasting my money. I just don't know what class i'd take if I added one. It's not like I can take any business classes.

How do I go about adding a class? I literally know nothing about how anything works at Rutgers (I know that's really bad). Who do I talk to? Do I wait until "add/drop week", or do I figure this out before school starts? Thanks

Its actually 13 credits, precal is a 4 credit course, while the others are 3. There is limited space in byrne seminar and to be honest they are just a waste of time. You can add another course and go to 16 but just now you are going to have 5 finals now compared to 4. Its very doable, and i would recommend you to do intro to microeconomics and then intro to macroeconomics in the spring which you need for business school.

As of right now, microeconomics sections are all closed so maybe during the add/drop period you can add the class. But Macroeconomics is open, you can take macroeconomics before micro if you want since macro is related to the whole picture while micro is related to small things like businesses or individuals. You need a C or better for business school in these courses. In the beginning these courses might seem easy but the finals for the class are extremely hard from what i hear. Prof sheflin who is a professor of macroeconomics puts 65% of your overall grade weight on the final, so if you fail the final you basically will fail or get a D.

I can’t take those classes until I finish precalc.

Wait until add/drop, afaik. What about taking one of the required core courses?

It’s not terrible to only take 12 credits. Sometimes it’s good, as a freshman, to take that many until you get oriented. Sometimes upperclassmen take less credits when they have a challenging semester and then make up credits during the summer at comm college (not all credits transfer so get them approved first).

Have you looked at Degree Navigator? That should tell you what you need for your core curriculum and give you a list of acceptable classes for each subject. I would probably take an easy elective course that you need since you are taking precalc and expos which may take a lot of time out of your schedule.

You can always add a course during the add/drop period.

I only took 13 credits my first semester, and it worked out well for me. I did also come in with 11 credits from AP courses. Keep in mind that during your first semester there are a lot of adjustments to college life in general. I wanted to take 16 but was having a hard time finding another course that fit in my schedule. When I went to academic advising, they convinced me to stick with the 13 credits. It gave me the opportunity to do really well in those classes, have a part time job, and a social life. Don’t freak out about getting everything done in the first semester- you have 4 years.

I’d suggest going to an advisor and making sure that you’re on track to transfer to the business school. If you are, stick with the 13 credits. I’ve heard precalc is really tough at Rutgers (I placed out). The extra time to focus on it might not be such an awful thing.
