I am a senior at the university of Kansas. A senior who is double majoring in two things she doesn’t think she likes. Strategic communications and broadcast journalism. I am minoring in sociology because when I first started college I was always interested in social work. I don’t know why I didn’t just major in that, just like I don’t know why I didn’t major in elementary education like I wanted to all my life! I think I did it because of the salary and I regret that now. I’m learning now that broadcast journalism at least at KU is all news and info. I’m learning that I actually hate writing and I hate reporting. I know everyone says your career doesn’t have to reflect what your degree is but I disagree. It is so competitive and I’m not going to get hired over someone who has the expertise in the field. I was undecided until sophomore year, and then I decided on strat comm and then later decided on broadcast. I wanted to do broadcast because I am interested in film and entertainment videos, but im finding out that’s not what this is. The only thing about strat comm that I can really say I like is learning about consumers and our market. I don’t know what to do or where to go from here. If I drop broadcast I won’t have to graduate a semester late. I can’t start over because it’s too late. I feel like I’ve wasted 3 years of school and money learning about something im not passionate about. When will I figure it out?
