Is it possible for society to be fair to everyone ?
In order for a society to work successfully , everyone cannot get what they think they deserve . Equality and fairness are two completely different concepts . While equality is about treating everyone with the same attitude , fairness is about giving everyone equal opportunities . This is difficult to do in the diverse society we live in , but observing statistics and information have helped governments to facilitate it as much as possible
The reservation of college seats to underprivileged classes in India is a testament to this ; it is also shown in the film 'The Pursuit of Happiness'.
In the movie , 'The Pursuit of Happiness',Will Smith portrays a salesman who loses his job, and then subsequently his wife . Despite the odds of having to support a dependent son without a job, he struggles and ultimately succeeds . In order to join a company ,he works strenuously and passionately over the course of a month . He puts in all his efforts in obtaining the position-one seat out of 500 people and succeeds . He succeeds not because he deserved it the most due to his financial condition, but because he worked the hardest despite the odds and gained the job because of his efforts .
Another example of fairness in opportunities can be seen in the reservation of seats in various colleges in India. These seats are reserved for disadvantaged people like the tribals and those of the hindered castes , who have been unable to successfully gain the proper education required for schooling. Here , the lawmakers of India have seen to it that people have the opportunity to be on the same par as the general public despite being disadvantaged.
Thus,it is clearly seen that society has indeed worked mechanisms to provide equal opportunity to all people . This opportunity is not a birthright , but something one must earn . Regardless of caste , creed or religion , the same amount of hardwork and dedication is required to achieve such a goal and it is in this concept that lies true 'fairness'.
