GPA is going to get you rejected, sorry. It's worth applying and it doesn't mean you're high. But if you are, props!

You can't automatically reject someone with a 3.4 GPA. That's still A range, and the OP's other scores aren't too shabby. A killer essay/interview might be enough to cause admissions officers to overlook somewhat lower grades.

it'd b pretty skillful to get those scores if i was high lol. any chance if i apply early for them to defer and see my senior grades?

a 3.4 is NOT A range. A 3.4 is "mostly Bs." Let's take a look at actual admissions statistics from the College Board site that describe accepted applicants at Columbia:
"67% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
18% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
9% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49"

Less than 10 % of accepted applicants had GPAs below 3.5. Unless our original poster is an under-represented minority or an athlete, I doubt he or she will fall into this lucky 9%. Sorry, I'm just stating the facts.

Columbia admits 11% of applicants. That's the same selectivity as Princeton. Considering their low admissions rate, it's not surprising.

I think people are underestimating the difficulty of getting into Columbia. As of this year, Columbia is the 2nd most difficult ivy to get into (after Yale) and I'm thinking that in a few years it will be the most difficult school in the nation (with the exception of Julliard) to get into.

yea unfortunately the minority i am is not of the underrepresented type, asian :/

You're right, my mistake. A 3.4 is mostly B's. However, it is somewhat balanced by the 4.3 weighted and is not a reason to reject someone outright. While less than 10% of applicants are admitted with under a 3.5, some still are admitted.

And trust me, brand_182, I'm not underestimating the difficult of getting into Columbia. I'm applying ED and I am totally stressed out even with good grades and some connections. I'm just saying that while the 3.4 isn't going to help at all, it isn't going to kill his chances.

No I think he may have a chance (I never completely discredit somebody's chances)...I'm just saying I don't think people are realizing how incredibly difficult Columbia is becoming. It's just not usually THE school that comes to mind when you think of the most selective, but people applying should be realizing that if any schools are soon to be the biggest crap shoots around, they're Yale and Columbia.

Even though his uw gpa is low, his class rank is pretty good considering he's in the top 5%.
