I'm applying to Princeton and Yale, with the average stats that most applicants have.

I just finished finals today, and I got a B in AP Chemistry and a C in AP Calculus. I thought I would have an A in AP Chem and a B in AP Calculus at the end of the day, but it didn't happen.

I have only had Bs in one class before in my life (Honors PreCalc). How much is that B and C going to hurt me in the admissions process?

Make sure you have some backups.
If you don't get in, remember that you don't have to go to an Ivy League school to be successful in life. It's not the end of the world.

The C will hurt, but mostly it will hurt your GPA and rank, which will lower your "stats" It may or may not change the outcome of the admission officer depending on other things. But it will make it harder to get in. I would try to find good matches that you are happy at.

In fact you may do better in life not going to an Ivy League with all those insanely smart people. There are plenty of good non-Ivies where you can stand out more easily and people usually see the graduate school not the undergraduate. So, if you went to an undergraduate Ivy and then ended up with a bad GPA, you wouldn't be able to go to a good graduate school.

One or two Bs won't hurt, but one C just might. Like others have said, you need to be looking beyond the Ivy League in any case. There are dozens of excellent schools that will still be thrilled to admit you.

is it a C for the term? I read something by an ivy admissions officer that said they are more lenient with calc grades, so you should still be in the running, but those grades won't help

That will definitely hurt, especially if there's not a reason for it (e.g. sickness, depression, etc.). I won't go so far as to say that it will push you out of consideration, but it honestly might come pretty close.

ouch. if you had average stats before, and then you get a C and a B, that kind of puts you at the bottom of the pile among most YP applicants. it'd probably be a stretch for you to get accepted.

i know someone who had a C in AP Environmental first quarter of senior year, and still got into Princeton, Stanford, and MIT but was waitlisted at Yale
