I'm really in love with Middlebury!! chances please!!!

So I know my grades aren't the best in science but I'm hoping I can make up for that with my extra carriculars and skills in language and journalism. I want to major in history or politics so I'm hoping my science grades dont' weigh me down as much as I think they will. I go a public school in CT that is nationally ranked and sends many kids to Ivy Leagues and Top LAC's. I haven't taken my SAT's yet(will be doing so in March). Also my course load is in the top 3% for challenging. I have some kick ass recomendations lined up and my essays will be good as well.

You are a junior? I think SAT’s will be helpful in getting some insight. But don’t tell me how many hours you volunteer… ugh. That’s like saying I work 80 hours a week without telling you what I do that requires commitment and why I do it. Anyway… your language skills are hugely impressive.

Get your English grade up to an A this year.

Yes i am a junior! thanks for ur opinion

It’s so hard to tell anything without scores. What about your PSAT? At or near 200?

hi, sorry to revive an old thread but i just got my first time SAT scores back and they were sup par to say the least. I got an 1860 with a breakdown of math:580 cr:610 writing:670. Thank goodness I have all summer to get that up! With this info does it shed any more light on my chances?

You will really need to get those SAT scores up to around 2100 to have a decent chance.

You can submit three SAT II scores instead of the SAT I if you do better on those. You also might want to consider some small LACs that are test-optional (Bowdoin, Bates, etc.). There’s a whole list of test-optional schools at Fairtest.org

Maybe look into taking the ACT, which is more content driven. And for some, they clearly do better one or the other (SAT vs ACT). S, Midd '13, only submitted his ACT’s to Midd (as well as to a few other schools, and later accepted).

Are you a minority by any chance?

Yes I am a minority!

While I don’t know jack about admission’s decisions, I would sincerely hope that minority status wouldnt make THAT much of a difference if the scores/grades aren’t there. It might be a bump but it’s not a blind spot.

Try the ACT next month. You might do better.Midd only requires one set of test scores. Also, be sure you will have time to take everything more than once, because most people do somewhat better the second time…

My S had SAT1s a tiny bit better than yours, switched to the ACT, and got a 29 and then a 31, without much studying. He didn’t submit SATs to Midd at all.

I agree an A in English would help. Are you first generation? You have a chance, especially with great recs and essays. The Language thing helps you stand out.

Ask your high school college admissions counselor to get you information on a program called “Discover Middlebury”, its basically Midd’s diversity program that seeks to boost minority recruitment at the college. You have to apply to get into the program (send them your transcripts, respond to an essay prompt, etc.) but if you are accepted they pay for your transportation to the college and let you stay overnight (Sun-Tues.) with a current student and let you experience a taste of what its like to be a Midd kid (i.e. sit in on classes, eat in the dining hall, go to the gym). I was a Discover Midd kid myself and can tell you that for students who are accepted to this program (there is about a 50% accepted rate) and then decide to apply, more than 70% are accepted to the college itself. I’ve kept in touch with a lot of people that I met during the trip (about 20) and only one of them was rejected. My grades were about the same as yours (my EC’s don’t even compare) so I’m sure you’ll have no problem getting accepted into the program, especially since you’re fluent in six different languages!

I hope this helps!

Thank you guys for all of your advice! I will definately look in to taking the ACT and that Discover Middlebury Program sounds very interesting!
