I'm sad because I might have to go to The Ohio State University

Hi everyone. I am a junior in high school in columbus ohio. I want to major in Public Health Education. I am considering Florida State Univeristy, UNC Greensboro, UNC Chapel hill, American University, U of Washington, and Ohio State University. I really don't want to go to Ohio State, I want to get out of Ohio but since my dad works there he gets 50% off. It makes me mad because unless get an academic scholarship to any of the schools I listed I can't attend there. I was wondering what do colleges look at when they give full ride academic scholarships for a minority? My parents can't afford to send another kid to college, my brother is a senior in Ohio State, and my sister a junior in Ohio State. I just wan't to broaden my horizons, and get out of Ohio. I am really going to be sad if have to go to OSU. I mean its a great school and all but it's just not for me.

What are your stats?

Why not convince your family to move to Florida. There all students who do 75 hours of community service and enter their senior year with a 3.0 will have their entire college bill paid for by the state. It's called the Bright Futures Program, and it's funded by the state of Florida lottery. There are terrific schools in florida. If you're desperate then maybe you should move to FL.

^^Only tuition is paid by the state, and tuition in FL is just over 3 grand a year, so it's not like they're paying your way private school.

actually, Coluhopeful, you just described the 75% scholarship...

100% is with a 3.5 in your core classes and a 1270 for m/e on the SAT

even with that, you still have to pay for books and housing

you have a pretty good shot of getting into FSU and UNC-G
you should apply already, if you haven't
FSU isn't hard to get into, but they have a lot of applicants and the first round of admissions has already gone by.

I know how you feel OhioGirl, because if I was told that I would HAVE to attend school here, I'd be really ****ed off. What are your stats? projected SAT? If they're really good, perhaps safeties such as FSU and Greensboro will give you nice merit aid. I've heard that FSU financial aid isn't great, but if you're someone they really want...I'm sure they can give you a nice amount. Since you're in-state as OSU and get 50% off, I'm guessing it costs around 7 G's for tuition/room/board. To tell you the truth, I think FSU can possibly match that with merit aid (or give you better) if you're a VERY good student.

this is a really, really late response and i dont know if it will eb of help to anyone.. but i was pretty much in the same situation as you. i really wanted to go to northwestern university (i got in!) but ohio state offered me a full ride. i was pretty bummed about it. so i reluctantly went to ohio state...and fell in LOVE with the school and consider myself to have had a marvelous education, in addition to having met many awesome people. after undergrad, i went to columbia for grad school. considering how much columbia cost me, let me tell you... i have NO qualms about going to osu at all. students loans really, really suck and i felt really blessed to not have had any college loans. but, of course, it's not always about money. i feel that b/c osu is such a large school with every possible resource, quality of student life is pretty high as well.

Count your blessings. OSU is a good school. Much better than Florida State and UNC Greensboro anyway...
