I know there have been other threads about the Asian population at UCI, but is it weird that I'm actuallly scared about it... while being Asian?

I've never grown up around Asians, so a part of me is rather excited at the prospect of seeing more Asians, but it also scares me!

This is probably a generalization, but it seems like some Asians just stay in their own little Asian cliques and are quiet rude. Rationally, I know not everyone is like that.

Wow, I'm sorry so say this, but that is just ridiculous.
I'm not sure where you live, but if your asian and you're scared to be around other asians, there must have been something different going on growing up for you. UCI does have the most asian, but not enough to make it dramatically different from any other UC campus. The people you meet are what you make of them, and if you already have an image set out, then youre bound to be scared. So just go in not thinking about race as the means to why you're there.

I already admitted in my post that I was "generalizing". I'm going to go with a blank slate. Honestly, I hate it when people judge a group as a whole, so I'll make sure I don't do that. I kinda realize I just have these irrational fears. I guess I'm just anxious, cuz I want to be accepted by other Asians? I don't know... but then again, I know that all Asians are not the same cuz everyone is an individual. I can't really explain this well. Does somebody comprehend what I'm saying?

What the heck, man. I want to choke you right now.

There is no probably little difference between the UCI population and another uni's population, because the Asians at UCI know American culture and speak fluent English.

Nobody is going to reject you on the basis of ... you don't know who Jay Chou is, or you haven't ever had pho, or whatever.

ooo Jay Chou! yummm pho' :]. I may like the two, but I still listen to american music, watch american movies, watch american cartoons (SPIDERMAN!!!), and speak english. Don't worry man haha.

Here's some info for everyone to know:
these are rough estimates of the number of asians from the population and percentages
*Irvine: 9789
UCB: 9721
UCLA: 9453
UCD: 9155
*

UCI may have a few hundred more but what is a few hundred out of 25 to 30 thousand? Look at those numbers. UCB comes quite close!

edit: Oh I forgot to add this. UCI may feel very asian because everyone has that bias when they step on campus. Also the SoCal sun might just make us asians look brighter =].

I get what you're saying, UCI2011. As an Asian/Pacific Islander who grew up mainly in the midwest and the Inland Empire, I can relate to you. I have to admit, the high Asian population of UCI kinda intimidated me at first. And it didn't help that most Asians I knew were like the ones you described, haha. But coming to UCI really changed my perspective. Yes, there are indeed a lot more than I was used to, but a vast majority are really cool and open and not "exclusive" like those high school cliques were. I'm sure you'll have no problem adjusting. =)

It's a stereotype, and nothing to worry about. I was just at UCI to visit the campus, and it was very diverse. I wouldn't have noticed the asian population if it weren't for the stereotype. Most people there are "Californian" so the only people that MIGHT feel nervous are people who are from out of state (lol but that'd be silly too). I had the same concern, but i'm SOOO over it...it's a great school, relatively diverse, and the campus is super pretty. Don't even worry, I think that moving away to college is what is scaring you, not the asians lol.

haha dont be so harsh on UCI2011. its obvious that this is a bit melodramatic, but honestly wouldnt it be scary if you never saw more than one asian a day, and then suddenly saw them all over the place?

Don't worry about it... It's much more easier for an Asian guy to fit in an Asian population... then an Asian guy to fit in a white population (me at ucsb).... so, yeah.

The US is 4% asian. California is 12% asian. It really isn't that rare grow up without seeing that many asian people, even in california.

Most UCs(except SC and SB) are above 35% asian.
UCI is about 50% asian.

Asians are little overrepresented in the UC system...I wouldn't mind seeing their acceptance rates curbed. Right now they're hurting the diversity of the student population.

Reben what about private universities outside of CA that are white dominated? do you propose we bring in people from around the world to those universities since that technically is hurting the diversity?

many of those universities already attract people from around the world.. as for the others, since they are private institutions they don't have an obligation to preserve diversity and represent groups as equally as they are in society.

The UCs should cut their acceptances of asians to 1/4

yes, but then again, you have to consider how many asians there are in the world. hhaha just the population of china is enough proof of asian domination. ahah pretty sad.

why should the UC's be obligated towards something like that? it is private institutions who have the power to do that because they can consider race in admisisons. UC's can not first of all and a person's race should not merit them more acceptance power then a person's stats/exc/hard work.

Asians are not to be taken as one humongous group. There are huge cultural differences between a Chinese and a Cambodian. There can be clashes between mainland Chinese and Taiwanese. A Vietnamese person would learn stuff from a Korean, and vice versa. I suggest you don't run your mouth off about stuff you don't know poo poo about. Lack of diversity in the UCs, my arse.

well hibiscuspink, there is a lack of diversity in the UCs esp when concerning Africans, Hispanics, etc.

and i dont want to offend anyone, but im pretty sure that the points system, holistic system is designed to give such URM an advantage. nawem sayen? :)
