I'm scared of Asians

Wow reben... that's pretty sad. Denying admissions to someone just because of the color of their skin? Is that what you're proposing?

Thats really sad and shameful to even think of something like that.

rebenbacher: I don't think it's possible for the UCs to just cut Asians to 1/4. As a public university, they must (should) offer admission to those with the highest merit based on the qualifications they ask for. Asians just happen to fulfill them the most. I know it may not seem proportional to the Asian population in California or the U.S., but many 1st generation Asians come from families where education is really valued, so they get pushed to study, therefore the average GPA and SAT may be higher. So the soultion to the problem is just to do the best as you can in school, because Asians GENERALLY just do better.

well said UC2011

^^^^ exactly what I was going to type UCI2011...Asians generally do better in school because their parents push them very hard and set their standards quite high. Just because there are "a lot" of Asians in the UCs shouldn't cause their system to cut Asian acceptances to 1/4th. If all the other races do the same, then there would be no problem eh?

In my school, we have blacks, Mexicans, whites, who rank very high. Two of my friends, who are black, take Cal BC and physics II courses (I am Chinese, and I'm too scared to take them) and do really well in those classes.

Academic isn't based on race; it's determined by one's own mindset and the will to excel. Reben, I think your comment was a little offending

I second UCI2011's notions. Public universities are not allowed to (particularly in California) take race into account when preparing admissions.

I also want to reiterate hibiscuspink's words. Within the skin color of the asians, there is a lot of diversity people overlook. I don't find it fair that people consider my nationality the same as Chinese, Cambodian, Korean, etc.

Many people generalize against whites in the same ways

There are severe cultural differences between a Swede and a Brit, A german, spaniand, italian, greek, russian, belgian, whatever....

Asians on the other hand all come from the same walk of life, overbearing parents that make you care far too much

rebenbacher: Wow, that was philosophically deep! (sarcasm).
What's the big deal? I don't get it sometimes. Racist people teach their kids that their "kind" is better than the rest but when the stats show otherwise. They argue for affirmative action to benefit their ownself. Isn't that what rebenbacher is doing? Suggesting that the amount of asians in a particular school should be set lower or perhaps nearer to the relationship of population for the given community?

It just so happens that the predominant population of asians or first generation american born asians live along the coast lines of the pacific and atlantic oceans. It can be deduced that the colleges along those areas will be populated by a higher percentage of asians as compared with national averages. Add in the culture effect and the proportions are drastic as in california.

You definitely won't find numbers similar to california's uc system if you implemented the same system in say kansas where the asian population is 2 percent versus the california asian population of 12% (statewide figures)

Yes, caucasian consists of many different cultures as well, but the caucasians that most people see today are not first generation and their families are not recent immigrants, so much of European culture is no longer obviously present. If someone wanted to teach me about Italian or Greek culture, then I'd be very happy to learn about it, but the thing is.. most of those people I see don't know very much about it themselves.

Many Asians, on the other hand, are first generation, so the culture and cultural differences are still present. Parents may push for education too much at times, but there is more to Asian people than just studying. Yeah, I've said I am nervous/scared about suddenly being in an enviornment with way more Asians than I'm used to (I think some people took this the wrong way O_o), but I'm still really excited. In the end, it doesn't really matter if Asians make up 40-50 percent or 25 percent of UCs. Each individual is just qualified to be there.

personally i really don't care about diversity
i don't care if i go to a campus and see every race color and creed
all that i care about is equality in the admission process
if an asian is smarter and more qualified for admission than a white person than they deserve to be there
end of story

NO!!! asians should dominate the world!!! haha just kidding

I absolutely agree with coltenhall, race really does NOT matter.

Coltenhall: I agree, may the best man or woman win.

Well, I'm white and I'm hoping to get into UCI (got into UCSB) and I live smack dab in Silicon Valley (AZN capital of the U.S.). My high school has a 7% white population and a 50% asian (not including filipinos) one. I guess you could say im used to it.

As far as diversity is concerned, was it not MLK who said that people should be judged by the content of their character not their skin colour. Don't blame the asians for staying at home doing homework.

w0rd. (random words to fill minimum req.)

I'm asian and I dont want to dorm with a white person; I have 1 month to find a roommate.

err why not? whatz wrong like white ppl?
i'm azn and i like 'em

Nothing, I just feel that their general attitude would detract from my studies. I know this is stereotyping but I think thats what would happen if a white person was my roommate.

being asian and not growing up with asians, i dont rly care what my room mate is.

I thought they put Asians with Asians unless you specifically say that you want to live with other people. Is that true?

^i don't know how but i'm pretty that would be illegal

lolz ok.. maybe its the other way around.
