I'm Sending An Extra Letter To The Admissions Commitee....to explain y my ACT scores are soo bad, i got a 21.

I prepared EXTREMELY hard for 4 months for this test, but i could'nt perform well, as i got a stomach ulcer diagnosed a week before my exam. My stomach was constantly distracting me from the exam, and i even had to take breaks during the test. ACT is already really tight in terms of time, and i'm surprised i even got a 21!!!

I really prepared hard for this, and i feel bad that i didnt get a good score that I truely deserved.

My concern was, if i'm writing an extra letter, in which format should i write it? Should it be just brief and simple? Or more explainatory and essay-ish?

Please help since i'm really concerned about this.

A friend’s D wrote an ACT explanation (hers was LD related, so different from yours). She included it as a personal statement in applications that had a space for it, and had a brief letter for colleges that didn’t have a logical space to include it in their applications. It was very brief - only a paragraph.

Have you only taken the ACT once? Are you planning to take it again? Did you take PLAN or something similar which might give an indication that your scores would have been better absent the health issue? If I was on the receiving end of that explanation, I’d be wondering about these things.

Yes, this was my first time doing ACT, and even if i plan to take it again, i can’t, since colleges won’t accept my scores. I took TOEFL, mayb that might help.

We have a percentage system at school, and i’m ranked first in class, and have a 91.3 % on my report. Our school is quite tough in studies, and a 90% + is considered excellent. Also, my recs are pretty good too.

I just wanted colleges to know that I took a gap year to apply to the US. I studied really hard for tests like ACT. But all my efforts are worthless since, i couldnt show how well i cud do. And i really DIDN’T expect that a medical issue would ruin everything. I just consider myself unlucky! =[

So mdoc, ur implying i write an essay, and a small paragraph would do in the addtional info section? What about colleges who don’t have such essay topics (setbacks…)? Do i send them an extra letter explaining what happened?
