So far, I have been accepted to Gerogetown (EA), Northwestern, UVa, and Notre Dame. Today, I got put on the waiting list for George Washington University. A good school, but nowhere near the caliber and prestige of the other 4 I mentioned.

So, what gives? Did they just not offer me admission because they figured they were my safety, and I wasn't going to attend? (Correct, but still seems unfair to make the assumption, they are in fact belittling themselves.) I mean, I'm sorry, but ***?

I feel you. I got in to ucla, berkely, USC (trustee) and now northwestern and waitlisted by case western which is definitely not on the same level

This is ridiculous. I don’t know about you guys but I probably spent (in total) around $100 to apply to GWU, and now this happened, and I legitimately want to email them and ask for my money back. I’m so mad right now.

They knew you weren’t coming. It’s called “yield protection.” Congrats on all your acceptances! Now take yourself off their waitlist and allow someone else who has GW as his/her first choice have the opportunity.

Haha thanks. Yeah, I’m not accepting the spot on the wait list. And I’m going to go into my guidance counselor’s office next week and vent for about 10 minutes, and then I’ll get over it. Getting into Georgetown in December so outweighed a crappy moment like this. C’est la vie.

PS It’s always been this way. I remember “back in the day” how surprised I was to get into Yale, Penn and Barnard but get waitlisted by Wesleyan!

Why are you so angry? Apparently it wasn’t your first choice. You already got accepted to schools you like more. Maybe they wanted to give spots to people who really wanted to go there?

Tufts Syndrome is the tendency to waitlist overly qualified applicants who haven’t shown a massive amount of interest on the assumption that they won’t attend in order to protect yield. Naturally, Tufts is known for this and thus it’s named after them.

I think GWU is on of those schools that likes to see “demonstrated interest”, which is probably the brother of yield protection and a cousin to Tufts Syndrome. Did you visit the school or go to any college fairs in your area? If not, they may have seen that you weren’t showing them enough love and that you would take a spot away from someone more likely to accept. Congrats on your fine list of schools offering you admission!

Please, get over it. Because they rejected you, someone who actually wanted to go there and demonstrated interest is going to get to attend. If you think all schools want is high stats kids, you’re wrong. They want kids who want to be there and will be proud to be there (and will increase their yield).

Also, GWU is pretty much right up there with those other 4, particularly if you applied as business or law.

This kind of post is so obnoxious. GWU obviously got that you didn’t want to go there, and were not respectful of the school. GWU had no obligation to inflate your ego (further.)
