I thought we could apply to one ED school or one restrictive EA school or as many EA schools as we could find, but no combinations of these three. However, I keep reading posts on this board about how someone's son or daughter last year applied to one ED and several EA schools. Is this allowed? Have I been stupid this whole time?

I believe it depends on the Early Action and Early Decision program.

If you apply to 1 ED school, you can apply to as many non-restrictive EA schools and RD that you want. If you’re accepted, you must withdraw your applications.

Restrictive EA and ED do not let you apply anywhere else early.

Thank you, Danielle!

Check the requirements of each individual school. While Danielle is correct in general, every school has its own “spin” on the general response.

For example, Brown ED does not permit you to apply anywhere else early, even if it’s EA. Columbia ED does not prohibit it, but frowns on it. Georgetown and BC have only EA, but will not allow you to apply anywhere ED, although you’re free to apply anywhere else EA.

Make sure you follow the requirements of your specific schools.
