I'm stuck. And May 1st is coming closer.

I'm between Syracuse, Delaware, and Boston College.
I'm from Upstate, NY and I'm undecided with the major, but I'm looking at communications (TV/Film), Art History, or Drama.

The ratio of costs is 1:2:3 (ex: BC 3x's as much as SU)

So with all that in mind...
would passing up Boston College be the biggest mistake in my life? Would Syracuse, due to it's strong programs, be the best choice? Also, Delaware 45 minutes away from Philly and Baltimore.

What should I do?

Strictly from the standpoint of relative school quality and majors:
Passing up BC the mistake of a lifetime? - No
Syracuse the best choice? - For TV/Film? Yes
Note that unless you're going to be a theatre professional, you may not be able to find a niche in the Syracuse drama program.
But realize that two years from now you may be the world's most enthusiastic anthropology or poli sci major. You'll want to consider how you feel about each school as a whole.

Do you think it's possible that if I went to Syracuse, I could do a double major in the College of Arts & Sciences and in the Theater Department? Or even double major in communications and theater?

I would say go with syracuse

Definitely Syracuse.

No, the Drama majors at SU are basically conservatory programs. The least intensive of them requires 82 of your 120 academic hours over 4 years, and an even larger percentage of your time. It's basically for someone who wants pre-professional training with the credentialing of a university degree, but there'd be no opportunity to study anything other than theatre. Syracuse has one of the most prominent Communications programs in the country however. Delaware has a B.A. in Theatre Production, but I wouldn't count on being able to act since their Theatre program is largely focused on a graduate-level conservatory program to which they accept grad students only once every four years. BC offers a B.A. in Theatre that requires 12 three-credit courses (36 academic hours), and is pretty well known as a good liberal arts drama program.

be an orange man

Well, its hard to advise anyone on such an important decision, but some things you should consider:

At BC so much of your 1st 2 years will be taken up with their core curriculum. Its pretty restrictive.

For communications SU is awesome (are you in Newhouse?). They require that you at least minor in another school (arts, business...) and double majors are encouraged - even in different schools

Boston is quite a bit nicer than Syracuse as a setting

At BC there will be a lot of Catholic HS kids - that may be positive or a negative for you.

Good luck!

Syracuse. Definitely.

They are pretty different gfrom a 'fit' perspective. My son felt like BC was too preppy (wasn't like that back in the day when I went there ;-) but liked Delaware a lot. He has a friend who is also a 'free spirit, non-conformist' type who is attending Syracuse.

But Boston puts Philly and Syracuse totally in the shade!

Dan D BC '80

Wow- thanks for the advice everyone. It's really good.

I think I'm going to knock Delaware off table, so I'm down to SU or BC.

And Gadad- is it possible to double major with drama at Syracuse? That way, I could grab a degree in drama and major in communications/museum studies?

Newyorkladii - There's no way to double major with drama in a conservatory program such as Syracuse's. You'd have two to three years of coursework remaining after your four years earning the drama degree. But none of SU's drama majors would do that; they go to SU so that they can head straight to NYC, get a day job waiting tables, and audition for Broadway shows. Check out the Syracuse acting curriculum:

And for comparison, here's the theatre major at BC. Twelve courses out of the 40 or so you'd take in four years:

Whoops; how'd I do that? Let's try the BC theatre curriculum again:

Delaware is not in the same class as Syracuse and BC for what you want to do. So D is out. BC is NOT worth 3x's the cost than Syracuse not even worth 1.5x's the cost. So go to Syracuse. It seems pretty hands down on this thread.
