I'm sure you're sick of these, but chance me? (out of state)

UC GPA: 3.57 unweighted, 4.21 weighted
SAT: 2310 (M 770 CR 740 W 800)
SAT II: Chem 730, Math II 750, Latin 740
AP: U.S. History 5, Biology 5, French 5, Calc BC 5
Senior Courseload: AP Physics C, AP English Lit, AP Latin, AP Psychology, AP Art, Multivariable Calc/Linear Algebra, French Independent Study
Extracurriculars: I play viola for 2 full orchestras, 1 chamber group, 1 baroque ensemble, 1 chamber orchestra, plus theory classes and private lessons
I'm vice-president of the art club (we raise money for materials, work on projects to put up in the school, hold school-wide events for art education, etc.) and do a couple of out of school art workshops
I volunteer at a bilingual daycare for children of immigrants
I'm also part of the school's branch of Water Aid International
I work at a summer school, teaching Chinese, Math, and English
Awards: National French and Latin Exam Gold Medals, North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad Top 100, National Merit Semifinalist, a couple national art awards (I'm not naming it for privacy reasons), a local music award (there's more stuff, but they're pretty small, and there's no room on the app anyway)
Personal statements were pretty good, not outstanding

Reminder, I'm out of state (from New Jersey). I'm sure GPA is an issue, but I think my test scores are pretty decent and my school is known (at least in its area) for grade deflation. I also understand that, even though I've shown dedication/consistency in my areas of interest (the arts and languages), my extracurriculars aren't really amazing. Do I have shot?

Thanks for your help!

Oh, also, in terms of general courseload, I took the hardest ones available and I also skipped up a year for French and Math.

patsfan21,

For what major?

I say you have a pretty good shot, even for engineering. Your UW and W GPA are the only things that are lacking (well, mostly your UW), but they’re probably still fine. Good luck anyhow.

thanks for responding, guys
i signed up for linguistics, with neuroscience as the secondary.

unweighted gpa is a little too low…but ur sat is good…w/ budget cuts it might tip in ur favor tho

If you were in state, I’d say it was a high match (UCLA seems to care much more about GPA than SAT, and your unweighted is well below the average). I think it’s actually easier to get in from out of state now though, so probably a good shot.

I sure hope so. ha
Grades at my school are pretty deflated. My school doesn’t rank, though, and the UCs don’t take any official documents like school profiles, so they can’t see average GPA, etc. Do any of you know if they would have some way of knowing about inflation/deflation at specific high schools?

Again, thanks to all for responding!

Eek. No supplemental questionnaire (yet). Totally out of the running?

… No.
