im surprised

i hadnt heard anything from michigam since i submitted my application since january 19th, then i received a e-mail asking me to explain a C that I had gotten in AP. Chem (they included that I was inconsistant but recognized my upward trend). Are they asking me to explain my grade because they want to admit me and they're second guessing themself? or are they just asking?

They are asking because they can't decide on you. They had a question and quite rightly decided to just ask you. They are on the fence and your answer may make a big difference. They wouldn't bother if you had no shot or were a shoo-in.

Probably one committee member wanted to admit you and another didn't so they decided to get more info, but that's just a guess on my part.

This is an opportunity. Grab it.

They are not simply "just asking". This is a great opportunity. Be direct and honest. Do not make excuses. Feel free to run your answer by us first. Good luck.

Hello Michael,

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is in the process of reviewing your
application for the Fall 2005 term. However, while reviewing your
application we noticed some inconsistencies in your academic record (C and
D grades). However, we also noticed your improvement through junior
year. Recently, we received your 7th semester senior year grades that
showed a C (70) in Calculus. Please submit an explanation for this
declining grade as soon as possible. Feel free to contact me if you have
any questions or concerns. My telephone number is included in the
signature below.

(this was the first time i heard from umich)
The 70(C) that was received in AP. Chemistry and not Calculus ( which is not a course available at my high school right now) was due to my medical illness which caused me to miss the midterm examination, a major part of my grade which I was not allowed to take.

(that was my response)

Thank you for your prompt reply. I must have been thinking Chemistry, but
typed Calculus. Is this an illness you've had throughout school or
something that just came about last semester?

Amber Long

(final response)

Im thinking about calling but i dont know what to say probably something like over looking my grade and noticing what i had to ofeer umich but i didnt want to make it sound phony

Can your school verify and authenticate the story? If so, I would recommend you have the school send an official letter ASAP (by Thursday at the latest) explaining that you are a good student and that your C was unusual and due to medical reasons.

Otherwise, I would just answer Amber's question as simply but accurately as possible.
