What book is best to buy for this course? I can't find a Princeton Review book for this class and that's the one I trust, so I'm half afraid I'll end up studying another one that won't be as good. Then again, if there's a book that is actually better then I would obviously try to get my hands on that one. Help, please!

I used Barron’s for the actual course (helped a lot) and for the exam - 3 or 2 weeks before it I read REA which is awesome - I would suggest to get both books

Is it possible to self study it with those books and get a 5?

Well, I would recommend you to get a textbook - you’ll need it, but most of your exam prep will come from those prep books :P

Thanks for the books!(: By the way, how difficult was the test for you?

I felt the test medium in difficulty - I aced the multiple choice section (mostly thanks to REA and Barron’s) yet the essay portion was a bit hard according to appass.com it should be a low 5 so it depends on the test curve -.- By the way, flash cards help a lot specially for memorizing titles, artists, periods, centuries (dont go by exact dates its too much), and random facts I did them myself and ended up with hundreds lol but they did help me a lot

Just wondering, what textbook should someone who is planning on self-studying get? Because I’d really rather not have to take a Studio Art class if I can self-study APAH. (I’m one of those children who had parents that brought them to EVERY museum in the vicinity when I was young and so I’ve sort of developed an appreciation for it.) And is it possible to use an older edition to avoid high costs?

That exam is HARD. I probably left about 25 blank, and I BSed one of the long essays, and I still got a 5. I would recommend REA though. And flash cards, definitely. In fact, REA has some lists in the back that would be worth memorizing by rote.

As far as textbooks go, I used Gardner’s in my class and it was fine.

Would the test be impossible if I self study? I self-studied AP World and AP Euro and managed to do well on them, I was wondering if it would be extremely hard to study for AP Art? I have been taking term art history classes but not necessarily AP Art History.

You can self study it and as far as the history is conerned you’ll do fine because you already have a solid background and trust me, it helps a lot. I did AP world last year and AP euro this year and they both helped me set my mind in particular historical contexts and hence explain and understand art better. If you plan to take it by your self, make sure you have a good textbook (I used Stokstad) and buy REA or Barron’s (REA is awesome for the test though in my opinion). If you can get a tutor once a week or every two weeks it would be great too Anyway I personally liked a lot what we learned and found it enjoyable :P

My parents did the SAME thing haha my mom used to read me cartoon stories of big artists since I was 6 or 7 lol

yes!!! im the 200,001st post in the AP forum!!!

Penguin20 can you please link me to the books you used to get a 5?..I can’t seem to find current versions of the Barrons and REA AP Art History books.

please answer!

If you are going to self-study, I’d suggest reading some of the great art history blogs out there. Famous Paintings Reviewed at www.TheMasterpieceCards covers paintings made from Renaissance art through Pop; that blog also has lists of other award-winning art history blogs.

Good luck!
