I play for 5 hours a day, and during the weekend it’s way worse!! (I don’t want to even want to measure it)
I’m just way too addicted, like the title says, and it’s like me getting addicted to smoking( I can’t stop), and it’s been controlling my life since I was a 6th grader!
I really want to stop playing but, my brain tells me to continue and compromise my studying time in order to satisfy myself, and that’s not a good thing. I just really need some motivation to do my hw right now…and some tips to STOP playing games. Right now, I’m a freshman and I’m glad I got the wake-up slap.
I’m still in my 2nd semester of 9th grade, and my school year ends in June. I hope everything gets solved before then so I can be set for 10th+ grades, and even college!
You are mature to recognize you game addiction as a real problem. Please let your parents know and ask for their help. And if you can meet with your guidance counselor at school he/she might also help you set up a schedule so you get school work done and then some playing time - you need to learn to prioritize but recognizing your problem is a great first step.
Cold turkey
So as someone who was pretty much addicted to video games throughout their childhood, I can relate to this since I’ve enjoyed gaming since before I even went to school. Hell I’ll play games in the middle of a school day on the way to the local community college to take classes! Just last week I was sitting there playing pokemon lol.
First off, hurray! Because you realize that this is a problem which as you can tell can hinder you greatly. The best option is tell your parents or older siblings because they can take the games away while you study.
As was said before you really need to just prioritize, like don’t pick up a game before homework gets done. And for the record I remember playing like 10hours on weekends comparing my playtimes…Yeah stop doing this.
Not sure if you buy a lot of videogames, but a good idea is to not buy as much. I remember getting a couple games a month, now I’ll get like 2-3 a year tops.
But really it’s just prioritizing school over games and no matter what I say you are the only person that can really stop you from playing games when you have homework. In reality it probably best to go without them and focus on building on extracurriculars and focusing on schoolwork. I kinda wish I played less games and did more things in school…Oh well can’t change the past. And I have great memories of some games.
I’ll be graduating with a 3.8 GPA and almost 50 CC Credits so it’s possible. Good Luck!
I used to be addicted to video games. I’d play before, during, and after school. But as the poster before me said, the main thing is prioritizing school over games. You seem very mature by admitting to having a problem, now it’s time to show discipline. Wait until after you’re homework is done to play games or if possible use video games for reward system studying (do hw/study for an hour then play games for 10-15 mins) this requires a lot more discipline to avoid just playing games all night, but it has helped me.
Also, get active. I don’t necessarily mean the physical kind, although that might help, but I mean getting active in your school and community. Join clubs. Do community service. One of the biggest reasons I don’t play video games alot now is I’m too busy to play. Becasue of ECs, community service, and senior stuff (college applications, scholarships, and just trying to graduate), my consoles have been collecting dust and my handhelds have been dead for weeks.
Good Luck!
A good idea is to restrict yourself from video games to certain times (e.g. only play on the weekends, or if you have already finished all your HW/studying) since right now, school should be a top priority.
I’m personally not a huge fan of the 1 hr studying/HW, then 10-15 minutes gaming since many games are best played over longer sessions, although it’s more of a personal preference. If it works for you, great.
I own a PS4 and rarely play for more than 4 or so hours on weekends, almost never on weekdays. However I didn’t play video games in HS.
I agree with @MITer94 that is not a great idea, especially if you have a self-control issue (which I do). IMO it’s great that you are facing what you view as a problem, it took me a lot longer. What I did to “fix” myself was to force myself to finish my homework first, then game away. At first, there wasn’t much of a difference, but eventually sleeping more than 4-5 hours a night was more appealing than more League or CS:GO.
