I'm torn between Berkeley and Fordham, and this question will help me decide.

Does anyone know what the acceptance rate is of Fordham undergrad students are to elite grad school programs? Because if it's decent then I will certainly go to Fordham over Berkeley. Just because Fordham offers me a full ride as a National Hispanic Scholar, so if anyone can help me with that I'd really appreciate it, because I can't seem to find the answer.

I am not sure that information is published in general locations. It may be more by department and school. I can tell you however that Fordham had a record number of Fulbright scholars last year, a Truman and Boren Scholar and some Rhodes Finalists. They already have one Truman Scholar for this year named. Fordham does extremely well getting into very well regarded medical and law schools and graduate programs. But like most schools, those are reserved for the students who finish at Fordham at or very near the top of the class. Fordham still ranks its undergraduates in each college so you know precisely how you are doing relative to your classmates. You needn’t worry about getting into a prestigious program if you come to Fordham and perform when you are here. Its that simple.

I can’t compare it to Berkeley. Its apples and oranges. Berkeley is a top state flagship in the top 5 in the nation. Fordham is a private, Jesuit and Catholic university in New York. In the end, you have to decide what you want from a total college experience, both academically and socially. Where do you think you will grow the most? Most likely to thrive and excel? Fordham has approximately 12 percent Hispanics in its student body. You won’t be alone at Fordham at all. Its a warm campus where people know each other and faculty know you by name and welcome opportunities to mentor you. Its the Jesuit ethics and ethos.

Hope that helps.

Haha thanks that helped a ton, like you have no idea, thats what I was thinking. At Berkeley I would be paying 17k a year, and I always think it doesn’t really matter where you start from, it’s where you end up and if you enjoyed your way there. I feel like this will be a new experience, if I go here I will for sure get out of California, and experience something new. A culture shocks awaits me I hear, and that’s what I’m looking forward to. I want to play on their soccer team, and I want to experience life and I think that this might be the way to do it. I’m already a liberal, but a very open minded individual and I want to learn from a different discipline if you will. Meet new people, I know how Californians are like already haha. All my teachers want me to go there, and I think I do to. I think I’ll be seeing you if your there haha, whenever I get there. You gave me that little extra shove I needed. haha, thanks. I was already convinced just needed that vital question answered, thank you so much.

Yes, if you do well at fordham, you will have many excellent graduate school options. If you want specifics, I suggest you contact the chairperson of the program/major/department that interests you and ask how frequently Fordham students are admitted into the schools you are looking at

Just one question do I have to mail my SIR to fordham? lol, oh well I’ll have 1 more week to think on it and then send. Do they have to receive it by MAy 1st or does it just have to be postmarked?

I think its a postmark day. DONT BE LATE. To make sure, call them and tell them. Fax a copy to them, and then send the hardcopy and check in the snail mail. Fordham welcomes you and each admitted student. Not coming to Orientation for Admitted students? Its a lot of fun and VERY informative. If not, its okay…just a bunch of fun.

Glad you made this decision. You can play soccer for them, perhaps walkon if you werent recruited, or you can play club soccer, which is VERY competitive at Fordham…sometimes TOO competitive…lol.

I’d like to go, but you know it’s kinda costly and that senioritis hit at just the right time. I have my 6 Ap test next month… so everyone is study study study… lol. If I was close by no problem but I’m a whole country away. Broke the news to my parents they were sad haha, friends also say don’t stanford and berkeley are more prestigious. That’s what Grad school is for right? These opportunities come one in a life time. That is my plan I have to manage the walk on trail. I believe in myself, I made all league and all CIF which is kinda like all state? I suppose for my division. I can’t wait for that! Just recovering from a bloody knee surgery… That gives me 2 months to get in super good shape lol.
Haha, that sounds like fun. Does anyone go frequent the Red bulls stadium? I’m going to save up a few dollars so I can visit often. Also Religion isn’t shoved to much down my throat right? I just need two theology classes? And is it just me or do all religious text have the same message… eh lol…

Nah, don’t worry about religion. Although there is a specifically Christian course you have to take, and the other theology tends to be Christian, neither are actually religious. In my experience they’ve been mostly related to human nature as it is effected by religion. Although at times you’ll have to learn biblical facts, the teacher’s I’ve experienced have never made me feel pressured to view their class any differently than I would, say, an anthropology class- interesting but not something I have to take personally.
The website has a decent photo tour you can look at, if you want to know any specifics send me a PM and which campus you’re on and I’ll try to help. Congrats on the full ride and sorry to hear about your knee, I know how annoying those are!
