I figure that since this is where so many excited SFSers are hanging out, you guys can give me a bit of advice. Basically, I need to decide where to go to school (as does everybody). I was wondering what factors led you guys to decide on SFS and what advantages Georgetown might have over other places, i.e. Brown, Berkeley and/or McGill. The financial aid is comparable for all.

I'm not sure if I want to limit myself to foreign service as a career, but the program seems to cover pretty much everything that I'm interested in. Aside of that, I'm worried about the social atmosphere. I'm not religious but am interested in living for once in a religious environment. More importantly, I'm pretty damn hippy and have heard from a lot of people that Georgetown is very much "Good old boy" mentality. I also don't know much about DC as a city, not to mention the surrounding area. Is it a place where you can take advantage of all the cultural events without spending a lot of money? Is there even a lot to take advantage of?

Something is pulling me towards it, coming from an international background. I like that it seems to have an international perspective and that's really important to me.

Any information really would be helpful, as I only learned about SFS through online research and don't really have a feel for the school.

i am a protestant from a public school in the south (def not catholic) and i chose to go to SFS this fall. While it is called the School of Foreign Service, something like 2% of graduates actually go into foreign service, so your options after college are definitely not limited to any careers, but really broadened by being an SFS graduate. Also, at SFS, you get a pretty unique education by experienced professors, etc. who have actually studied and lived the classes they are teaching.
Socially, Georgetown is very diverse. I am white middle class, and i chose georgetown because of diversity. People from all 50 states and like 40 countries, and everyone there is really nice.
And the catholic affiliation---everyone i talked to about it said that if you chose to ignore the assistance the jesuits provide, then you will never really notice the school is even catholic.
So in my opinion, obviously a bias one, choose georgetown....in the heart of one of the most unique and diverse cities in the world...

those two statements pretty much apply to me also. i think the only way i can know for sure about what kind of vibes i get from gtown and if i feel like i could spend four years there is to visit and probably stay overnight as well.

I don't have the possibility of visiting, as I'm half a world away until the beginning of August. But I'd love to hear about your visit after it happens.

By the way, I used my friend's name (memyselfandi) to post that first one, but then i got my own. So flyonwindshield is the same as the original person.
