I will be spending the night this Thursday evening. I have a few questions:

What would be a good class to visit? I am interested in political science, but I thought it might be more intriguing to observe a discussion based hum class.

Are there any super cool events happening on Thursday or Friday?

If you visit timeschedules.uchicago.edu you can check out course offerings (make sure you're looking at Winter 2009 classes).

I imagine that both poli sci and hum would be good courses to sit in on, and you could probably find a discussion-based poli sci class. However, hum might be better if only because you'll see a true cross-section of students, whereas with poli sci you'll see a slice who chose the class. You will also have to take hum classes if you come here, so it would be good to make sure you like the idea of taking hum!

I can't think of anything off the top of my head, though if you're staying overnight in a dorm you can ask around. Thursdays seem to be big days for club meetings and Fridays tend to be more unstructured with a variety of activities (trips into the city, frat parties, etc.) Doc Films shows a movie every night of the week, so you can always go there.

I agree with unalove -- go sit in on a HUM class. I think that if you like (or can at least handle) the Core, then it's a good indicator of whether you might like UChicago. I'll PM you.

If you haven't been here yet, I would definitely recommend taking a tour. They leave at 10:30am every day of the school week, and leave from the Admissions Office in Rosenwald Hall.

You've got some great suggestions for classes to go to - I would recommend sitting in on a first year HUM class, or another core class, maybe SOSC.

At night, there will be an array of options. Check out all the fliers on the bulletin boards and see what you're interested in. There are also movie showings EVERY NIGHT at docfilms, our resident film club. Thursday, we're showing Joseph Ellison's "Don't Go Into the House," at 9:30pm, and on Friday, we are showing Twilight! 6pm, 9pm and 11:30pm. Check out docfilms.uchicago.edu for more info.

Friday night there are always parties - it really depends what you are into. If you like Greek Life, there's that, but there is also a lot, lot more. If you're staying with someone (which I highly recommend), just see what they are up to.

Closer to downtown, there is a very large purebred dog show going on Friday Saturday and Sunday. All breeds of dog competing in conformation and obedience classes. By McCormick Place. Like Westminster, when they aren't in the ring, you can talk to owners/handlers and meet the dogs. There are also demonstrations of herding, agility, scent hurdling, 'flyball', dancing with dogs, etc. Vendors with every kind of dog thing. Pack a lunch, you will not like the food prices.
