I'm Visiting!

I'll be visiting DC this weekend-- Sunday and Monday. I'll be hanging around campus and touring and checking out classes.

Anywhere specific I should look?

Well, if you have time, of course go to the Capitol and the White House. There is the Smithsonian to go check out (that could take two days alone), as well as Arlington, the Pentagon, and the Library of Congress.

Lots to do here, just not enough time...

I think since you're going to DC in the fall, those things can wait until then. You're two days should be spent entirely on campus, with students, in classes, eating in the dining room, doing an overnight, etc.

At least tour DC to see the major monuments for a couple of hours(The White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, etc.). GW runs a trolley tour thing done by the students. Check it out here: http://gwired.gwu.edu/adm/visit/options.html

"Trolley Tour
See where we are in relation to the rest of the city! Spend fifty minutes with a STAR aboard our old-fashioned trolley and learn how GW students take advantage of all that the Nation's Capital offers. This complimentary trolley tour begins and ends at our Visitor Center."

Georetown is also a very short walk from GW. I'm talking about the nice strip of shops, restaurants, etc. You should definetely check that out also! The restaurants are awesome...and girls go wild over shopping.

If you won't be returning until fall orientation, this would be a good time to get to know the city from a practical standpoint. Will you be taking the train home for breaks? Figure out how. Will you need to switch your cell phone provider? Who gets good reception? Take the metro all over the city from GW. Walk the neighborhoods. That way you will be confident and able to enjoy any free time come fall. If you are not a "city person" this is a good time for you to develop your "city legs." You don't want to look like a tourist come September.

If you're gonna walk the city, go with a friend. DC is a great town, but still a city.

And stay in the NW area, trust me.

Have fun. :)

I'm visiting DC next weekend, but only for a day and a morning. Will be staying in Arlington for two nights. Can't wait!

Oh, thanks for all the advice. I forgot to come back and update about the actual trip.

It went really well, and it was warm and lovely and GWU/DC is great. I had some initial trouble with the separation of campuses, but I can see how it'd work out.
