I'm worried about my ECs...

Okay, guys, I am currently a sophomore and my ECs are pathetic. I only came to the US last year and it took me 1 year to settle down and get over the cultural shock and everything. So, I didn't do anything huge last year.

Uptil now my ECs are:
1. FBLA (Regional competitions)
2. Public Speaking (State competitions)
3. School Literary Magazine (Poetry, art, etc.)
4. MSA (Muslim Student Association - Volunteer work)

If it matters, I had many spelling bees in middle school, and I emceed for 3 years at school celebrations etc.

I suck at all sports except maybe... badminton. And they don't have a badminton team or anything at our school.

You can't join Honor Societies at my school until you're a junior. So next year I'm going to join National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and maybe English Honor Society. I also want to participate in a Science Fair project or two, and I plan to join ICU (International Club or something). Plus I'm going to join a Tutor Program at our school (you can also only join that if you're an upper classman).
I also plan to enter a literary contest held in junior year and hopefully place in the competition.

Granted I do all these (I hope I can), I still feel my ECs are nothing compared to other people's.
Any opinion? Advice?
As you can see I'm more of an Art/English/Math/Science person and not a Sports one, what other clubs can I join?

On a completely random note I know SGA is a great EC, but I think it's more of a popularity contest than actual work. On the other hand, I guess it shows leadership skills (leaders are supposed to be popular after all). I wish I could be an SGA person, but people don't know me at all. Sigh.

er maybe you could be the one to start a badminton team in your school and be the captain? Get a teacher or someone powerful to help you persuade the school into allowing a badminton team.

I say get a job and volunteer.

You're only a sophomore. Your ECs normally improve junior/senior year. Just continue being involved. =]

@Yopua ... I REALLY want to do that, but I can't work in the US until next year (Worker's Permit?).

You have some very interesting EC's; just continue to pursue your passion in your EC's and you'll do fine. Having been through numerous college presentations I can report that colleges consistently say they are much more interested in focused passion than a laundry list of clubs and sports.

Do what you want to do, not just to get into an awesome college. But admittedly, if you follow your passions, you probably will end up doing more ECs. You're only a sophomore (as am I, haha), so let your passions develop.

Dude, just do what makes you happy. I think your going a lil overkill. Also, try to get a position (treasurer, prez, watev) in the stuff that you particpate in, instead of just saying your in 50 different clubs.

Don't be offended, but it sounds like your ethnicity would help you in you college admission because of affirmative action. You probably already knew that... but regardless lol

njwhitekid has good advice too :D

^She's Middle Eastern, isn't she? That doesn't help in admissions.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear before; when I said I'll join Honor Societies and Clubs, I meant to say that I'll check them out, and then stick with the ones I do like. I'm not looking for several ECs, I'm aiming for a couple ones that I'm serious about (heard most colleges like less focused ECs as compared to a laundry bag full of ECs?)

@panky - I'm not offended if my ethnicity is going to help me, lol. That makes me happy!

Did karajanhra think I'm Middle Eastern because I joined Muslim Student Association? Well, I'm not Middle Eastern (Southwest Asian).
I'm South Asian (Pakistani to be exact). But I guess that's not really going to help me with admissions either.
