I'm Worried. Help.

Hello everyone.

I’m applying to Rice ED and yesterday I was speaking to my college couselor and she told me that I’ll be the first person in the history of my school (12 years) to apply to Rice. I’m from New York and Rice is pretty unknown here. My concern is how will Rice know that I go to a very competitive school if they have never received application from my school. My school has an acceptance rate of 2%, graduation rate of 100%, and is extremely challenging. I don’t want my grades to look weak compared to other kids where the curiculum is easier.

They will get a profile of your school, and the regional rep for NYC will be educated on the schools in the area. One of my daughter’s suite mates is from Brooklyn and attended Stuyvesant in NYC. Good Luck!

Personally, I think it would be an advantage to apply from a school where no one in 12 years has applied (assuming that you are a good candidate and have taken a rigorous schedule, your test scores are in the range for admitted students to Rice, and you have extracurriculars or co-curriculars that show commitment, talent, and impact). My guess is that most colleges would be happy to expand their student body beyond the usual school base.

As @Houston1021 indicated, the Rice AOs will be well versed on schools in the area and will read the school profile that is sent with your transcript in order to gain an understanding of your school context.

Good luck!

As @Faulkner1897 said you may stand out to the admissions staff rather than blend in. My Daughter applied from a school in Houston where many students apply to Rice each year. She was worried she would get lost in the pack of applicants.

Your being from a highly selective school in New York will make you stand out from other applicants. So the very things you’re concerned may obscure your application will actually enhance it. Trust me. Rice is quite a sophisticated institution, and the admissions office will be familiar with your school. Relax and good luck!
