I'm worried.

I feel like I've slipped through the cracks and been accepted because of a fluke. At the welcome reception, I listened to the speeches. One said the average stats of the admitted students are 4.3 GPA and 2000+ SAT. My stats were not close to the average and I feel like I will completely die at Cal. Should I be worried? I mean, I'm stressing out because I don't want to go to a prestigious school and not graduate. It's just something that's been bothering me ever since acceptance came out.

Are there any current students who felt like this before going to Cal and ended up succeeding?

College is how you make of it. It's a fresh start don't worry. O and by the way, my overall stats are lower than their average too.

don't be. you're not alone! i had like a 4.25 and like 1800on the sat but my act was equiv to about a 1920. im kind of worried too but hey like beconfident said its a fresh start!

as long as you take your studies seriously, you'd do just fine. I know many people with 1450+ SATs (out of 1600) that slack off and get bad grades. And I also know many people with relatively low SATs (<1300 out of 1600) doing really well. Don't be worried, be excited about coming to Cal.

There is lots of help and tutoring available, through the school, through friends, and through the professors and GSIs. Many people can help you, you just have to utilize their help.

DRab, what kind of help is available through the school? Like tutors?

Course specific tutors for particular courses, academic advising, tutorials about different strategies, counseling for people having academic issues, writing tutors, and I bet there is other stuff out there. Also, friends are available.

Cal is hard, it's difficult to get straight As, but it is no where nearly as rigorous as everyone claims it to be. I'll admit, it's pretty tough, but you can skate and get a pretty decent GPA in many of the liberal arts majors. Get a good start too by taking some easy classes your first semester to help you acclimate to the workload. There are a lot more resources available now on the internet, even more than when I got in, thanks to things like facebook and rate my professor/class websites. And it gets easier as you go along. I found, I was working superhard my first two semesters, and subesquently, every semester got easier.

Berkeley will chew you dim minions up and spit you out!

Hehehe, just messing with you guys...

andrewtdx, thanks for your input.
CalX, I hate you.

I feel the same way. My sat scores were pretty low as well. I tend to procrastinate a lot, cramming in a day or two before huge exams. I know that I will keep this up for the rest of my life, so Im afraid that I might fall behind. I also know that Im not as smart as the other kids...I just have a really good short term memory and tend to remember everything that I cram in, but forget it a week later.

BTW, what were the average sat scores and the average gpa for this year?

According to the welcome reception, the average GPA was 4.3 and the average SAT was 2000+. Quite vague, but it's still enough information to say that the average admitted student is very strong.

Anyone want to become study buddies? ;)

I got below average SAT I scores for Berkeley, and got the highest grade (w/3 others) in a final in one of my classes.

Well, I had a 4.8 (10 APs) and 2200 equivalent SAT--so you'd think I'd do really well right-- and I am not doing so hot my second year, meaning your high school GPA and SAT scores mean relatively little.

Rather my work ethic has declined, but if you have the work ethic, you'll be fine.

80% perspiration 10% inspiration 10% inclination= 100% success as corny as that may be
